What I Did On My Summer "Vacation" Thought some of you might enjoy watching Explosive Ordnance Disposal troops "dismantle" a C-130 that made an emergency a couple miles off our air base in Iraq. This action allowed us to get it onto flat bed trucks and bring it back to base. http://www.sather.afnews.af.mil/news/story.asp?id= 123105653 http://www.dvidshub.net/?script=video/video_show.p hp&id=41427. That was VERY cool! One of the things I miss most of all about being an 0351 was doing demo. Blowing things up is one of life's greatest pleasures. BIAP was one of my favorite places to get "trapped" when I was doing convoy escort duty with the Wisconsin National Guard. If you have to be deployed, it isn't a bad place to be. Bill |

Thanks Bill. My last deployment was to Ali (Tallil) and those of us who have been both places think BIAP is a sh*thole in comparison. Not that we are complaining - it's still 10 times better than conditions on most of the Army FOBs. We really appreciate what our Army brethern go through serving. |

So, I assume the C130 was considered a total loss? When I first read the post and it said "dismantle", I didn't expect what I saw in the video. |

...I think you meant "explosive Ordnance disposal" Much more to it than just blowing things up- 'shaping' is an art unto itself. |

Glad to see you're having fun over there, Don I saw the title and thought "that sounds like a Mythbusters episode gone horribly wrong....". Stay safe man, we need all the Uly visits we can get at work |

Tallil was a cool base too. It sucked because the transient housing tents were at Cedar II so the best we could do is look for excuses to be there at chow time and eat at the outstanding mess hall. There was also a place there that made pretty good pizza. The USAF convoys we sometimes escorted were cool about cutting us loose when we got inside the gates though. It may be pretty far south, but the area could get kind of rough at times. We lost three guys in that general area to EFP IEDs. I'm glad you made it home safe. Did you bring home a piece of the Temple of Ur? The rug in my living room was purchased along the road between the two bases. Bill |
