I'm sure everyone has heard about, or experienced the frustration of trying to install the factory luggage brackets. Nothing seems to line up! I just got a replacement for my bent left bracket (thanks Froggy!) and sure enough...the damn thing was so far off, it could have been for a GS! I did a little reading in the archives and expanded on/modified the installation tips I found. This is what I recommend: Start with all three separate pieces. Loosen both the left and right foot peg brackets but DO NOT fully remove them. The first bolt you'll want to insert is the one that goes into the peg bracket. Do this on each side but only a few threads. Now insert the middle bolt (the one that's one inch long) on each side. Again...just a few threads. You should now be able to insert the last, and longest bolt (two inches) on each side. Now insert the bolts for the cross brace that connects the two sides. From here, you can start to slowly tighten everything up. I recommend that after the foot peg brackets are fully retightened, remove each bolt ONE AT A TIME so you can apply a little blue Loctite. I promise that using this method will eliminate any and all frustration, wrestling, skinned knuckles, stripped bolts and holes punched in the wall  Tipsy (Message edited by tipsymcstagger on July 08, 2008) | ||

It's actually worse Tipsy... just getting everything to line up and attach is the easy part. Both XT's I've seen at dealers had right side passenger pegs that dragged against the sidecase when deployed. Just like my X when I finally got the damn things installed. In order to get that peg to clear you have get everything lined up and bolts started BEFORE starting the right side footpeg bracket. You need to accurately estimate the angle and the final position of the forward sidecase mount brace-to-footpeg-bracket and then tighten it down, THEN install the right footpeg bracket to the frame. THEN rotationally tighten all the other mounting points. You MAY have to do this two or three times... Ridiculous procedures for a $13k bike... | ||

Ridiculous procedures for a $13k bike... Hmmm...I interesting...I don't ride two-up when I tour so I've never extended the pax pegs with the bags installed. I'll take a closer look at that the next time I install the bags. Tipsy | ||

My left passenger peg drags on the sidecase. Rather irritating, really. I'll be removing the side case rails this week, as I've no need for them except on longer trips. The top case will likely never come off. I appreciate the heads up - I went through some very similar frustration recently trying to get a damned Ventura rack all installed on my Firebolt. | ||

Sorry to hear about those issues Tipsy. Was it because of that slight bend it had on the crossbrace mount? Also, i am glad you made it home fine, i was afraid you were gonna swerve off the road from the sound of a bottle rocket. | ||

I'm not sure there was any bend in the bracket at all. Once I decided to loosen both peg mounts, I had the luggage brackets installed in about five minutes. Thanks again for the help with ECMSpy. I'm wondering though if we were getting false recognition with the software. The decel popping is still as bad as it ever was...primarily from 3000 RPM down to 2500 RPM. I think it was just the placebo of me wanting to hear improvement that made it sound a bit better leaving your place. Either the software isn't working with my '08 ECM or I have a wicked vacuum leak in the exhaust system. Tipsy | ||

To resolve the foot peg issue, rather than loosening the foot peg brackets to line things up, looses the 4 tail section bolts. This will allow the back of the tail section to move up and down a good bit. Install the brackets and then re-tighten the tail section bolts. | ||

I had the same problems with my factory brackets as well. they were on the bike when I got it. Made me wish I'de never taken them off! Anyway I got a 2x4 about two and a half feet long and wedged under the bracket and used the foot peg for leverage while the wife looked from the other side and guided me to install the bolt at the foot peg bracket. I cant believe she still doesn't know her right from her left! but she is talking to me again so it's all good. If that had not worked out I would have resorted to the bigger hammer. I think there have been some modifications lately. Mine look different, where the Bags attach to the bracket, than previous pictures I saw. Installed mine, following the directions, within less than 30 minutes. Or was this just luck? Ride safe Werner | ||

Any pictures with a step by step for future reference There are three cap head socket bolts that secure each foot peg bracket to the frame. Loosen those six bolts (three on each side) and install the luggage brackets one side at a time. Then tie the two brackets together with the cross brace. All that's left is to tighten everything up. It's really that simple. Pictures won't offer much more. Didn't take more than five minutes once I decided to stop wrestling and loosened the peg brackets. Tipsy |
