Man this sucks ! Got a screw in my back tire. Ive got 1600 miles on it and it still looks good for a while longer. Can these be safely repaired ? What is the preferred method if it can ? Patch on the inside, plug ?? The screw is almost dead center. |

Inside patch is pretty safe unless you intend to go to the track. I would stay away from a plug. The problem is to find somebody to do it for you. They all shy away from it on account of liability |

I had a flat at 4k miles as well. I put a new tire on it. 175 dollars is a lot cheaper than a trip to the hospital and a totaled bike. |

Well I looked over my extended warranty and I do have the wheel / tire coverage, so I will probably go with the obvious and have it replaced. Just seems like such a waste, but I agree with Eddie....much better than a trip to the hospital. |

last year had a screw in my rear tire (my XB9SX) after 300 miles on new tires.....found a shop that plugs from the inside with a "mushroom" style plug....held up for about 8K miles and I had to put new skins on |

The same has happened to and it sucks! Honestly, please just replace the tire. It is so not worth it to chance what could happen. I once damaged a rim and thought it was not to bad. Well i got a broken hip that looked like a piece of glass, 2 broken ribs and a huge cut for being a dumb ass. All that and I was wearing a full suit, best protection you can buy. Doc said if I hadnt been wearing what I was I wouldnt be here anymore. Nuff said! |

+1 on replacing the tire. Plugs/patches are great when you only are getting the bike to a shop to replace the tire. I used to be a patch tire sort of guy - and experienced what a total tire failure feels like at 50 MPH on a full dresser Harley (patched tired failed). The only good news from that experience is that I am alive to tell about it. |

Tim, what kind of patch were you running, and how did it fail? I have not heard a first hand account of a tire patched from the inside failing (unless it had some serious and observable structural damage). I'm curious what kind of failure you had and what to look for. |

Patch the tire/don't patch the tire- dyno oil/synthetic oil - counter-steering/no counter-steering. Bring up any of these topics if you want an extended debate on a motorcycle forum.

Agreed Hugh... I wasn't looking for an argument, just some real world data. |

Real world data? Plug-patch it and forget it. Plug-patched numerous tires for myself and friends and it's not going to be an issue. I have never heard of a failure of a plug-patched tire. If the tire is fixed properly, the plug-patch will not fail. I have done it to heavy touring style motorcycles like my Street Glide to light weight bikes like my Husky SM610S and high horsepower bikes like my old Muzzy built ZX10R. Thousands of miles with no trouble. That said, if I paid for a tire warranty I would simply get the dealer to replace the tire. Either way, get your money out of the tire......(or tire warranty) |

Reep - I was running stock Harley Dunlaps. The tire was patched from the inside. The failure was a tear/blowout of the sidewall at about the same "location" as the patch. The patch was in the center of the tire. There did not appear to be anything structurally wrong with the tire pre/post patch. But it did fail. Prior to this incident (about 5 years ago) - I would have patched anything and forgot about it. Now I aways buy road hazard tire warrenty and just replace it. |

Good info to know- I have plugged a couple of tires in the past. Oh yea, I forgot to add "ZTL is good/ZTL is a gimmick" to the list of topics...

I have plugged many tires once I plugged one rear tire three times! On a trip one of the guys got two nails side by side in his rear tire. We plugged it and motored on with no problem. Sure you can replace the tire but a plug works in my experience of course you do so at your own risk. These days tires rarely blow out they just go flat and stay on the rim unlike the old days where the tire blows and comes off of the rim. The rule is I think that one plug decreases the speed raiting of the tire by one. So if your tire is rated for 180mph a plug reduces it to 160mph. Not really a problem for me. However before riding I always do a pre flight including checking the tires and tire pressure. |

Seeing as how I work/ride in your area Rob, warrantee is the best thing. Just replace the tire. The roads around us are too full of nails, screws, glass, CRAP to risk patching. I only patch a tire so I can get to the shop...on my own bike and for work. |
