Early on, my timing was adjusted and the plate wasn't tightened down enough, which caused the timing plate to move completely away from it's original position (which was never marked). I've used the method on this site to set the static timing, but I'm still not 100% certain that it's correct. The problem I'm seeing is, about 60% of the time when I start the bike up, it afterfires out the exhaust making a loud "POP"! Other than this, the bike runs well. When I tried to fix the timing from the plate being loose, I eyeballed where I thought the plate originally was, then set the timing from there using a voltmeter. My question is this: Could it be possible that I have the plate set way too retarded? I swear that I set it at the transition to TDC, but I'm not sure how to tell if it was set to the correct cylinder's TDC. Does any of this make sense? Any help would be appreciated.
