Hey guys, I bounced my rev limiter today on my X1 it bounced twice then I came up to a stoplight, It idles fine and revs fine but as soon as I go to take off it spits and sputters like no tomorrow but then runs fine at WOT for a minute or so then starts sputtering again. I disconnected the battery and ECM and it didn't help. Bike has PC3/force intake/race ecm and ran terrific until I bounced the rev limiter, Any suggestions? |

GUESS: fueling possible issue with injector / filter trash in nozzle Why: intermitting coil problems will get worse as parts fail. runs good WOT short / then poo - fuel starvation guess unless you see copious black smoke, crap got loose and to the filter ( asumes not in tank ) |

When I first got the bike I thought one of the injectors might be failing so I used some injector cleaner with the first fill up and it seemed to clear up the issue with the small stumble it had. It ran like a raped ape for the last 2 months then this morning it hit the rev limiter and now it will idle and rev fine it just will not go under load. I have a force header on it and it doesn't seem to be shooting out more black smoke than usual hehe. It seems like it is not getting fuel under load. The next step I guess is to check the injectors and maybe disconnect the power commander to see if that does anything. When you say trash in the nozzle do you mean the injector being plugged? Oh and I hear a popping noise which seems to be coming from near the air intake, More of a click id say than a pop, Like when a fuse blows. I checked all the fuses under the tail section is there any other ones I should look at? (Message edited by Ak99X1 on July 11, 2008) |

How about checking your AFV? Any trouble codes? Proper diagnostics beats checking random stuff anyday, although the ol' Power Commander Toss is always a good idea, and the first step toward improving/diagnosing your bike. |

The check engine light never came on, Tomorrow im going to hook up the ol jumper wire and see if it throws any codes and then dive into the afore mentioned stuff. Thanks for the input guys and keep it coming, I just got it back on the road after fixing the rear shock and had put it up for sale, Then I decided to hang on to it and it pays me back by acting up! |

+1 on the fuel lines and nozzles, had a boat once that did the same thing. It was carbed but the jets were clogged, would idle all day long but that was about it. +1 on the PC toss also. Most people don't want to hear that but just ask someone who actually tossed it, they seem to be much happier. Free advice, take it for what you paid for it. |

Fuel filter is full o crap. Drain gas, change fuel filter. |

No black smoke no lights could be water / crap in gas or tank. fuel pump fail : No, bike runs Injector electrical fail : No, no code air leak Not likely failure is abrupt sounds more like crap in filter |

X1s don't like power commanders! They will actually cause feedback to your feeble old ECM and kill it(been there, paid for that). BTW, it's never a good idea to "bounce" it off the limiter. These are old school tractor engines. |

Thanks guys, Im going out of town for the weekend and won't b able to tear into her until Mon. Keep the input coming though, As it stands right now im going to change the fuel filter, Check the injectors and toss the PC3. I was never opposed to the Power Commander but figured it was running great and came with the bike, The old saying "If it ain't broke don't fix it!" I will be sure to keep yall updated, Thanks again to everyone who's chiming in. I just remembered that when I did bounce it it was fairly low on gas (which I know is never a good thing to run it close to empty) but the low fuel light was not on. Ok I just went out and made a jumper wire and did the code check. It came up as a code 13. I looked that up and it says oxygen sensor. I looked at it and it had backed itself out and was just dangling inside the opening. I tightened it back up and took it down the street but the problems still persist. I checked the codes again and 13 keeps popping up. I think 13 is also bad injectors. Don't have much more time before I leave for the weekend but that's the update. Going to go test the injectors next. Should I buy a new O2 sensor? (Message edited by ak99x1 on July 11, 2008) |

Nope, change out the fuel filter and siphon that fuel out of the tank; cheap and fast elimination of two items. Had you recently fueled up? You mentioned that you had put some cleaner in there as well? I have seen some cleaners actually remove a plastic membrane from the inside of a fuel cell, and the rest is history in chasing down the problem:$$$. Swap out fuel and fuel filter. |

Ok, After I do drain the fuel and swap out the fuel filter is there a way to reset the codes without a scanalyzer? I read while doing a search on these kinda things that the ecm will store codes and continue to run crappy? Also does anyone have the cross reference auto part numbers for 1.)fuel filter and 2.)Oxygen sensor for PC3 and normal? |

Reading the error code will not clear the code! When you read the codes, it reports the last errors it remembered. You fixed the problem. Go for a ride on the highway to let it relearn the AFV since it was learning wrong stuff with tthe O2 sensor dangling. |

It is almost unbearable to ride, It spits and sputters badly, How long till it relearns the AFV? |

It's not uncommon to ride up to 30miles to re-learn on a race ECM so by that rule it makes sense to expect the same. Also a few start-up cycles is also a good thing. |

I overlooked the part about the injector cleaner. Did you do the math for number of gallons your tank holds? I ran into a problem once with putting too much in and had to ride forever to get it out of the tank. All those folks up and down that country road probably thought I was trying to ride a weed eater. |

I just took it out for about a 30 min ride. Starts out in first fine then after a second or two it surges badly, then shift it is fine for a sec then same surging and that goes on through all gears. When I go WOT it is fine and runs like it used to. I can't mess with it anymore until Sun or Mon and im going to do the fuel filter and drain the tank.Im sure I will have her back in fighting shape with this kind of support. Thanks again everyone and i'll post an update when I have one. |

I dont have the cross numbers IIRC the o2 is bosch the injectors are ford 13 is 02 not o2 and other, check the wiring and be sure that the 02 is grounded the pipe is the ground. the injectors if disconnected / shorted code 23 32 |

If you're going out of town, try disconnecting your battery while you're gone. Might clear the codes if left unhooked long enough - it works on my turbo Dodges anyway. Never tried it on a tuber though, all mine are carb'd.... |

Does anyone know if this bike has a throttle position sensor? I had a very similar problem with a BMW K75 a few years back and it was a bad TPS. Just a thought. |

Yes the bike has a tps sensor if the circuit shorts or opens it codes. |

Hey everyone, I just drained all the gas and changed the fuel filter, plugs checked all the fuel lines, and made sure the O2 sensor was grounded. I took it for a short ride and it didn't change a thing. Now it also has made the speedo show 20 miles an hour at idle so im going to see if I can find a short somewhere along there. Im not sure what to do next except change the O2 sensor as that seems to be the only code it is throwing at me. |

Yes good to hear the offending party was duly punished! Was the sensor damaged from rattling around? can you see anything wrong with it? |

Im guessing that is what happened, It backed out and was some how damaged. All I know is I got a new one in there and it works great, Then on the break in ride and everything going great I move my foot to shift and my shifter peg had worked it's way loose and fell off needless to say everything is getting a once over and tightened. Thanks again everyone! |
