So when do you know your wheel bearings have had it? I just did my rear brakes and replaced everything (caliper, rotor, pads, fluid) and when I had it apart I couldnt turn the bearings by hand. That doesnt seem right to me at all. They've got almost 11k on them. They turn fine now assembled but did seem to make very little noise at first when I put my rear wheel back on. The noise was when I rolled it slow by hand. | ||

first off make sure they are not black. if so buy new asap! you should be able to free roll them a little bit. but really not that much. since after you install it , it kinda squeazes the center cylinder into the bearing. but no doubt you should be able to stick 2 fingers in there and get it to spin, if you feel any odd rough spots go ahead and replace. better safe then sorry!! | ||

I was lookin for a bearing puller and installer just now...where the heck do you find these? Or will the Harbor Freight jobby work? | ||

I broke the pin on the Harbor Freight one trying to do mine. I'd try to find something better. I didn't have any luck finding anything that worked without spending a fortune. If someone has any ideas, let me know too. | ||

On an '04 your bearings should have the orange seals. The bearings with the black seals only came on early '03 models and can be replaced free of charge at your local dealer. The orange seal bearings seem to be fairly hardy. I don't think I've heard of any failures on those bearings except for on the Ulysses. The bearings will have some resistance when turning by hand since they are loaded against the center spacer. They should still turn though, and they should feel relatively smooth. I haven't removed a set of XB wheel bearings, so I don't know what exactly is required. I was able to change my steering head bearings recently using a blind bearing puller (#27158) rented (free!) from auto zone. This may not work on the wheel bearings due to the spacer in the wheel, but since the tool rental is free it's probably worth a shot before spending money on a special tool. | ||

To remove wheel bearings, you need a 25mm collet and a 30mm collet on a slide hammer. We use this set from Motion Pro all the time. It works very well. http://www.motionpro.com/motorcycle/tools/view/bli nd_bearing_and_bushing_remover/ Pete |
