Yikes! I did all that with the head in my hands, but it was the exhaust studs. I didn't use loctite on the coil itself, and I only used one. So far, I haven't had any problems with it, but the studs keep coming unscrewed, so I'm going to go ahead and invest in some red loctite. When I replaced the engine mount bolt, I don't think I used loctite then either. I can't remember. I think I was drunk, and I've slept since then. It has lasted 14K without a problem, so I'm leaving it alone. I am in violation of the "don't reuse motor mount bolts" rule, but I was very careful to torque the bolts exactly the way the book said. |

If you are going to use Locktite on an exhaust stud use the Hi-temp, Red Death, not the standard Red Locktite. 300 degrees-vs-450 degrees |

Broke another motor mount. As usual, this one is on the inside (the hard one to get at). In fact, since ther first one broke, all of the following ones have been on the right hand side, facing the bike. I have lost count, I think this makes 5 or 6. I am guilty of seeing how fast it would go, since I did rejet the carb this weekend. And I may do full throttle take offs more often than I should. So maybe I could take it easy this time...NAHHH. Ride it Break it Fix it Repeat. New Motto. |

Buellboy492, I was just over that way today, I drove up 43 from Kalamazoo to 37, to 6. Lucky you nice road! I would check the hole that the bolt threads into to see if it holds the unbroken bolt in tight or if the bolt wiggles around in it loosely. Read the above posts about the Helicoils, if you decide to go that route let me know, I can lend you the tools I'm going to be back in the area possibly Thursday. Are you doing the Blessing this year? Are you going to ride June 1-3 up to Torch Lake with the Detroit Hooligan? |

I'm dying to know why you keep breaking those bolts! I seriously doubt its any kind of abuse as there's lots of people doing far worse to their Blasts than you and dont have as many mount problems. At this point I would think those bolts holes are loose by know. It would be great if Swampy could help you out in person. I'd also think about adding the 3rd tiebar to the mount. See the racing Topic for a subtopic on just how to do that - converting a 2001+ to a 2000 spec for even better handling and just a tad more idle vibration. I'd Helicoil and red locktight it in - the helicoil, then apply all bolts to spec tq. and use all new engine suport hardware - lol GT - JBOTDS! EZ |

Well, this is probably just a waste of time, but I am going to try one more factory bolt in the same hole. I'll let ya know how it goes, with careful attention to detail on re-assembly. Swampy- I will for sure be at the blessing- my cabin is just a very short distance from the airport- on 68th one mile east of M-37. If you (or anyone) will mapquest the intersection of Sherman and w 68th in Baldwin it will give almost perfect directions. I am actually one house in from the intersection. I work on June 1, 2 and 3. |

had to order the bolts, Wild Bore H-D will have them in a week, they say. The bolts have not been loose when I try to remove them... darn tight, it seems to me, based on how hard it is to turn the screw extractors. Of course, there is threadlocker on it, that stuff works. I'll be sure to check for slop. |

Finished the rebolt. It goes faster each time. I plan on checking the torque after about 100 miles. The bolt holes were not wallowed out. I still was going to do the Helicoil, but Advance Autoparts and Autozone do not carry a 7/16-18. They had one with finer threads. I chased the threads first, then blew them with compressed air. I support the motor when tightening the mounting bolts. I haven't figured out how to tighten the biscuit last and still torque it, so I torque it off the bike, doing my best to line up the ears. As frustrating as this has been, it actually hasn't been very expensive to fix. My wife suggests I buy a new (meaning different, not new) bike. But that would cost much more than new bolts two or three times a year... I still have a hesitation bordering on stumbling, just when riding with small throttle openings. It feels just like running out of gas, Is there a carb adjustment I need to make? |

Glad to hear you got it back together. With the cold weather you are probably running lean off idle so I would suggest adjusting the idle air screw richer. If that does not seem to make any difference I would install a larger primary jet and re-adjust the idle air screw. Its time for riding! |

I have installed larger jets, so I must need to adjust the idle air screw. I will check another topic for procedures. Also will look at third tie bar conversion as suggested. Thanks, everybody. After not riding for like three weeks, it was great to be on two wheels again. I can't believe that more people don't choose to ride to get around. It just feels so good! |

That reminds me, I have to go check how things are holding up. My doctor rides to work every day, even when there is ice on the road. |

Third tie bar installed. Thanks again to the contributors and administrators of this board. I ordered a tie bar as described in the Racing the Blast section- the tip that really made a big difference is that you have to order a longer tie bar and cut threads. I have never done this, and the posted advice is right on the money-you have to cut threads all the way down to the joint, then cut off about 1&1/3 inch of the bolt. Then you have to buy longer bolts to mount. I bought grade 8 hardware and new lock bolts. I also drilled out the cap over the air idle adjustment screw and adjusted screw 2&1/2 turns out. This made a HUGE difference in the way the bike runs!! If anyone is scared to do this or to re-jet, it is not hard. I drilled a 1/16 inch hole in the cap, then screwed a small screw into the cap- the cap fell out attached to the screw without any trouble. |

Link to related posts: http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/201 64/110366.html Glad things worked out for you and thanks for your testimony on the ease of working on the Blast. It will be interesting to see if the extra tie bar helps your problem. It will certainly handle a little better now, but it may not be readily noticeable. |

I see now I mounted my tie bar "backwards" adjustable end next to frame. Shouldn't matter, right? In a previous post I said I would re-check the torque on the engine mount bolts. But, won't the yellow, paste-like threadlocking compound applied by the factory "cement" the bolt in place? I usually have to heat the broken bolts up to remove them. Now that I think about it, I heat up the unbroken opposite one to remove and replace as well. So I don't think I can get a new torque reading, unless I hit the bolts with a torch, and do I want to do that? |

Tie bar can go either way just as long as it clears everything (doesnt rub on the frame-depends where you put the washers). You can re check the torque, but you cant re torque it (yes it breaks the loctite). However if you recheck the torque and it moves, then that would most likely indicate that you've got a problem. But if you have to heat the broken & unbroken bolts to remove them, it doesnt sound like you have a torque issue. |

Quick question- I just sheared off both front isolator bolts. Are these the same bolts that I keep referring to in the forum above. If the rider behind me hadn't noticed the falling parts, I may have been in trouble as both sheared clean. Any thoughts? |

Yes, this is that section! One bolt was probably broken for awhile and fell out when the other broke. (Unless you were doing something very radical |

Hey guys, I broke my "do not remove" part on the engine mount, I was driving to my Grandmas and all of a sudden the bike was even noisier and vibrated worse than it usually does! DOES ANYONE KNOW THE PART NUMBER FOR THIS PIECE????}} HELP! I don't want to drive it with it broken like this as I'm afraid the engine is going to fall off.

Hey Evosix! I've been to Superior Wisconsin, and Hurely and Ashland. I don't know what the part number is, I believe it is the front isolator bracket(technical name) commonly referred to as the Do Not Remove bracket. You will also need to replace the two front motormount bolts and washers and follow the instructions while torquing the bolts down with Red Locktite, loosening one full turn and retorquing them to 60 ft. lbs. The parts can be had from one of our fine sponsers such as Buellerandy at Appleton HD Buell for a 10% discount. I would also check the front isolator and determine if that is bad or not. Has the bike been down hard? |

Hey Swampy thanks for the reply! No it hasn't been down hard, more like been down a few times at under 10mph and me cushioning the bikes fall. I live on a horrible dirt road and I think that it finally took its toll on the bracket. I HAVE to replace the bolts?? |

Yes, the bolts are one time use only. Use only the genuine Buell parts for those parts. The manual says to use red loctite but the new bolts come with preapplied loctite, however people have been using red along with the factory applied coating. Be very careful taking those bolts out, if they don't come out easily don't let them break off on you, apply heat to the bolt to loosen the previously applied loctite. Check the threaded hole carefully to prevent future bolt breakage problems. When you reassemble it lightly hang the motor from the bolts to keep the bracket from moving after you get it together. Again check the front isolator to make sure that isn't torn also. |

You can't replace that bracket. Because it says, "Do not remove" you are stuck replacing the whole motorcycle. Ok, seriously now, when I finally replaced my broken bold with the Buell specific bolt, it survived two installations, both without locktite. It's better to go new, but some have gotten by without going new. Others have simply created more work... |
