Eight-row oil cooler with Jiffy-tite fittings Is that normal on our Buell's off the floor, or is it something special for the XP? Not at home right now or I'd go look! |

Hmm, I don't see any rain in the forecast till tomorrow evening. I am looking for an excuse to get out and ride and see if I learned anything in the track day and Keith Code School last week. |

Just to remind everybody of the Cary crimestoppers ride next weekend http://www.carycrimestoppers.net/events.html http://www.carycrimestoppers.net/MC_Ride/Rideflyer .doc Was decent last year, and they handed out a ton of prizes at the end at ray price HD. I will be there as my father is an organizer again this year. just thought I would toss it out there. My latest experiment: I'm attempting to repaint the headlight housings on my Firebolt. For reference, this is what they looked like before: I'm using Dupli-color rattle can chrome, but so far it's just silver. It's difficult to get a nice even coat when painting the inside of the housings. Too light of a coat results in more of a matte finish, to heavy results in runs. My plan is to give both housings a couple good coats of paint, them clean/polish/wax one of them to see how glossy I can get it. I don't expect the paint to last, but at ~$5/can it only needs to last 1/10th as long as the factory coating on a ~$50 replacement headlight housing. |

Spike, be careful when you rub, touch, polish, sneeze, or fart on the chrome paint! It tends to take away the reflective properties of the chrome. Remember when I painted my frame with transparent blue? I used that same chrome underneath for the 'anodized' look. I thought that I could polish it also, but that never got an even look, or worse, looked more like brushed aluminum! I do have some chrome 'rocker panel' tape. If you could figure out the correct shape to cut the tape in, I bet it would work better than the paint, but then again it might bubble after a while. |

Spike, are the housings metal? I'm thinking a coating of the jet-hot polished aluminum finish would last forever. Is it difficult to just replace the firebolt lights with something else? |

I'm learning that now. I tried polishing one of the housings, it came out duller than before. I might try to just use the unpolished one as is. Foil tape was my next guess, but I'm not sure how well that will hold up.

The housings are plastic, so no sending them to jet-hot. It does seem like someone out there could coat them with something that could survive the heat of an H3 bulb. The only replacement light I've seen is the 90mm Hellas, but then you have to fabricate your own mounting bracket and make larger holes through the fairing. I think a more reasonable solution would be to use HID lights in new stock housings. The HID lights actually run cooler than an H3 bulb, so at the very least the housings will last longer. I'd actually like to try that solution myself, but at the moment I'm having a hard time trying to justify the ~$100 replacement housings, let alone the HID kit. |

oh well. There are always fork mounted aux lights. Or you could fit an 1125 fairing. |

Update- Since polishing the chrome paint isn't an option, I decided to heat test the chrome painted housing. Here's what it looked like after an hour: Obviously the texture has changed, but the finish is still somewhat glossy and there's no discoloration. I'm letting the other housing cure overnight before I subject it to any heat testing. |

Another update: Since the paint seemed to be mostly holding up, I decided to bolt on the lens and try it again. Having the lens off during the previous test allowed the heat to escape, so I expected this test to provide worse results. With the lens in place, I left the light on for well over an hour. I was surprised to find that while the texture is no longer smooth, there's still no discoloration. One thing to note, the headlight gets extremely hot. Even after leaving the light off for a few minutes the entire headlight assembly was too hot to touch with my bare hand for more than a few seconds. |

AMAZING!!! World record time getting caught up on nearly 2 & 1/2 weeks away from BadWeB, so I got some time to post about my trip to PA. Of course with any trip I take I end up making it Buell related somehow. The first night I went to the sleepy little farming hamlet of Somerset, PA. That's how one of my fraternity brothers described it, and since he lived there for awhile I feel no harm in calling it that. But at least they have a Buell dealer:
Hihgland H-D/Buell/Polaris (ATV's only) had a gaggle of Lightning based Buell's and a couple of Blast!s on the floor. And some 'obsolete' V-Rod accessories for 50% off... The second night I headed to Rostraver, PA and was surprised what I found in the middle of nowhere (LITERALLY!). The oldest H-D dealer in the state of PA:
Looking at the 24 hour clock you'd probably think this picture was taken somewhere in Europe, but this is from Quaker country:
I have NEVER seen a dealer where the Buell sign took up more real estate than the H-D barf-n-shield! Their welcome mat even supported the 'bolt of blue':
When I walked in with my Buell varsity jacket on the parts guy remarked that it was an 'ancient jacket, but in such great shape', so they have known Buell for some time. and as the following picture attests they are 'up on the new' too.
You would think seeing what is likely the only 1125R that will ever have a chrome license plate frame attached to it's arse end would prepare me for what I was about to discover next... A dripping in chrome Blast!
Hell, their plastic bags even have Buell printed on them. The free spaghetti dinner they had that night next to the dealership was icing on the proverbial cake. The 3rd night I was headed towards a bike night at a Quaker Steak & Lube on the South side of Pittsburgh, which surprisingly took me right by Cerini's. As I'm trying to find the QS&L I notice that I am suddenly back in an urban setting. OH! A Best Buy, thinking to myself that I would stop in on my way back I continued my search for the bike night. I end up finding a cool hot rod/custom shop that had among other things this tasty rod:
I continue on and get further into the underbelly of the beast and think to myself that this can't be right. I've been some pretty rough places in my life and this is beginning to get close to some of the better ones. So I decide to turn around and head back the direction I came from. As I get to the Best Buy I notice a little further back off the road - but right the heck next door - is the Quaker Steak & Lube. There was no sign by the road so I guess you just had to know where it was. The crowd had died down somewhat, but there was still a Buell present - and owned by a multiple Buell BadWeBBer no less. In addition to a '98 S1 White Lightning he was riding this XB12S:
At least the guys at QS&L have figured out the proper use for a Softail:
2 of the 4 bikes on display in the restaurant were Softail's. The picture above was taken right from where I was sitting. I kept asking about the 'oil' that was leaking onto the booth and I was told 'relax, it's just steak sauce'. Well, everything is factual about the trip except for that last part about the steak sauce...I just thought it was funny... So this past Saturday I was up at Ray Price and saw the beautiful S2 with only 153 miles on it. BEAUTIFUL, but I really don't think the owner is going to get the $8,500 asking price. Something tells me that the bike was imported from Iowa...
Man, tough crowd... I guess it's time for me to go to bed... I know it's early for me but I couldn't get to sleep until 3:30 last night - and today SUCKED! 1313 |

Brankin - Love the Chrome Blast. Spike - I was looking at my PIAA lights last night. They are quite small. I bet you could fit them into the Firebolt headlight holes. |

Spike - I did a little research on one of the auto restoration boards. Seems refinishing plastic reflectors is a common problem in that circle. Here's some possibilities: Vacuum Deposited Aluminum. -This is generally believed to be the OEM method. The process is generally called vacuum deposition, sometimes vapor deposition as the material--aluminum--is converted to a vapor state before it adheres to the plastic substrate (reflector base). Cosmichrome System - Not really chrome--just a highly reflective paint. So, it may behave better than true chrome as a reflector, but whether it can withstand the environment of a semi enclosed headlamp is questionable. General can't handle temperatures above 180 degrees. Alclad II paint - The Alclad II paints--in many colors including several "silvery" ones--are well known to hobbyists and modelmakers, and are available at many hobby shops and internet retailers. Here's a link to their website: http://www.alclad2.com/ |

Brankin The orginal Cerini's was in Donora a small town down by the river.. I did a lot of business with Babe who was the founders son. Ernest was the founder. The orginal shop was wood cases and tin ceiling style.. I heard that a couple years ago HD bought the old place and has reassembled it in the new museum that is about to open... |

Hi Shawn, glad to see you received the patch. It was my pleasure! Thanks for thinking of Pat, I'll let her know. And Thanks to Kristi for all of the work! If you happen to make it for Buelltoberfest, look me up. I'll be camping like I did last fall with the cop crew. But 8 1/2 months is taking a risk, as you probably well know. I hope everything goes well for your wife. Congratulations! Enjoy the warm weather up that way and I'll talk to you later. Take care... (Message edited by twig on June 03, 2008) |

The BEAST has been unleashed!!! I don't know exactly what I did to accomplish it, but I fooled around for an hour or so in the garage tonight making minor adjustments to the XT-BOLT. After I was done I took the obligatory test ride. HOLY SCHNIKEY'S!!! In the recent past I was thinking that the XT-BOLT wasn't as quick as my S2, but tonight's test ride changed that thought as soon as I was able to apply the throttle more than in around town mode. If you know what is pinstriped on the tail section of my S2, the XT-BOLT now carries on that tradition. SPROING!!! 1313 |

If I had to guess I'd say that was the guy I sold my Ulysses to. I saw him on Saturday, he still has the C3 sticker just below the tail light. |
