OK, I've been too smug. My M2 has been flawless since I bought it last year, without any of the niggles others here have reported. Last night I was riding and felt like there was a lot more thrashing and commotion coming from the engine than usual. I thought maybe the primary chain needed adjusting so I checked that tonight. It didn't really need anything but when I started the engine there was a hell of a tapping noise that eventually went away after the engine ran several minuts. I tried to localize it but I can't really hear anything bad in the valve covers or pushrod areas; it's all noisy. The noise is at the right freq to be a lifter and it doesn't get louder when you I load the engine with the clutch. It runs OK. Does it sound like a lifter? How much can I expect to ride it until it dies totally or should I address it now? What is a dealer going to charge to fix it? I can fix it but I really really don't have time right now. Does the head have to come off? It will be interesting to see if the noise comes back after it cools off. Thanks. | ||

If you dropped a lifter you would know about it. The bike wouldn't run very well IF at all. Maybe one lifter is slow to pump up. How many miles are on the motor? Maybe its time to "refresh" things. I've got almost 40K on my M2 and she is getting "freshened" up soon. | ||

I bought it with about 8200 miles and it has between 11K and 12K now. I bought it because it was pretty much unmolested and the price was OK but it did show signs of neglect. The oil was very dirty and the primary chain was slapping the case enough to leave distinct marks on it. I changed the oil when I got it and again not too long ago with Mobil-1. It looks pretty dirty to me already. I think I will change it again. Started it up when I came home tonight and it sounded normal. WTF? | ||

my bike started doing the same thing...my other buells were never that loud, but the dealer thinks it is acceptable noise...so i will ride it and see... | ||

Beachbuell may be on to something, I would change the oil again. It could be something is clogging the lifter? Or worn oil pump? Maybe a motor flush would help. Just a thought, Chuck. | ||

A trick that works on cars with dirty oil and possible lifter problems is good ol' ATF. It has a considerable more detergents than motor oil. Drain half a court of oil and refill with ATF. Ride for a tank or two and then do your oil change. Cheap way to try and clean the system. | ||

I didn't ride last night but I did start it up when I got home. It actually sounded quieter than normal. I've always thought there was one valve that was louder than the rest. I wonder if a bit of crud could have caused a problem with a lifter and then got spit out? Will be interesting to see how it sounds when it's good and hot. I think I'll add some Marvel Mystery oil (cuz I have some) and ride for a little bit then change the oil again. The oil looks awful diry for the amount of miles on it. I think that bike went a long time between oil changes with its prior owner. | ||

There probably still is crud in the oil if you only changed it once. An oil change only changes the oil in the filter and oil tank there was still some old oil in the rest of the system. Happened to me too when I first bought my bike. The leftover oil in the system tainted my new purty Amsoil. |
