So my 15-YO son Jeff just passed the MSF BRC (he started on dirtbikes like his three older brothers) and we're getting the '91 Honda Hawk (his oldest brother rode it; now Jeff gets it) ready. We (I'm having Jeff do as much as possible) are doing pretty much all the maintenance we can before he starts riding it, and I engaged him in a discussion of the Hawk maintenance vs the Uly. 1. Clean the carbs? Nah, Uly is fuel-injected; don't need to do that. 2. Adjust the valves? Nope, hydraulic lifters. 3. Change the coolant? Uh, air cooling here. 4. Lube the chain? Umm... He was ready to sign on the dotted line for a Uly... Hopefully we take our first ride on Saturday; up through the Jemez Mts. of New Mexico. Oughta be fun! |

Sounds like he'll be looking for a Firebolt a year from now. |

It's funny how all the magazine articles don't mention these features and benefits. Adjusting the shim-under-bucket valves in my sons ZR-7 requires camshaft removal, then we have to juggle or locate the correct thickness shims. What a pain. My Uly has some quirks but I love the low maintenance. (Message edited by rclaytonsharp on June 12, 2008) |

Hey Dr G: my 15 year old son just completed the MSF course too! I picked up a used Blast for him to learn on...and we have been doing a bunch of short rides over the last couple weeks...lot's of fun! Last year he rode on the back of my Uly to Homecoming...this year he's riding the Blast. Nothing like learning while on a 2,500 mile adventure! |

Jodie's 17 year old son just passed his MSF last month as well. Ridden dirt for 5 years now and has kept his YZ, which he still rides pretty much every weekend. He rides with us occasionally, but none of our bikes are "cool" enough for him. He was very sad when Jodie sold her Ninja, he of course thought he would just inherit it when she bought her Bonneville. Jodie thought long and hard and agonized over the decision but finally decided she just can't help him buy a street bike. She couldn't live with herself if anything happened to him. We have put him through the MSF, and as I said he can ride with us, but it's totally up to him to get his own bike. He's trying to decide between a HyperMotard and an XB, but with starting college this fall those will be aways off. (Mom's ultimate plan) |
