Hey Guys and Gals, I was just contacted by a guy who is travelling from Toronto to Newfoundland with his father and uncle through the Rider Assistance Network. He indicated that he has sprung a leak on the starter gasket and would appreciate some help in repairing as its spewing primary fluid on the rear wheel. The bike is a 2003 XB9 and I need some part numbers for the following parts. 1. Starting Motor Gasket 2. Primary Gasket Is there anything else that will require replacing once the primary is opened. I assume you replace the gasket the same as the tube frame Buells. There is a Harley Dealer here in the island that I can overnight parts in from but no Buell Dealer and thats why I need part numbers. Please email or pm me through my profile with the information. No, no, read the post closer: They just drive through it. Kind of like Iowa or Nebraska. (Note that people, as far as I know, try not to drive through North Dakota. By the way, Iowa stands for I Oughta Went Around.) |

Thumper, People actually live "large" in Newfoundland. They are probably some of the nicest people in the world. (And I'm not just saying that because my Mother in Law is from there!) |

You do realize I'm on an island.........a very very large island in the middle of the North Atlantic Ocean. YOU CAN'T RIDE THROUGH........you can ride off in spots but your getting awful wet. I knew a guy once that put too much wood in the woodstove in his igloo.........damm thing melted away to nothing leaving him at the mercy of the polar bears. Screech is yummy and only available in Newfoundland.... Back the the problem at hand though Called the local HD Retailer with the part numbers and he advised that unless I wanted to order 10 gaskets I was out of luck. Where there are only 2 XBs on the island I guess selling the other 9 will be difficult. Called the nearest Buell Retailer in Nova Scotia and they didn't have the starting motor gasket in stock, I asked for availability and the parts guy advised that there were NONE in Canada. If thats true then Buell should get their arse in gear and start supporting these bikes. I guess when the rider gets here tomorrow we will make the gasket the old fashioned way. |

That takes me back, years ago you could make a fairly good gasket from a Kellog's corn flake box with a small ball pein hammer |

Well, He got here today and into the garage we went. Pulled the starting motor off the XB and we found that the factory didn't completely mill the mating surface for the starter leaving about 1/16th of an inch sticking up at the very bottom. Of course this little bit was keeping the gasket from totally sealing. We took a dremmel with a stone and lightly sanded the edge flat, some 3-bond 1104, the original paper gasket which came off in one piece and all went back together. There is now a Buell XB Lightning in my garage with the S1 and S3T. I took photos but left the camera outside in the garage. |

Unless someone magically dumps $2,000.00 into my bank account I'm not coming. Built a garage back in March and its taking up more than I planned for. Oh well - even though its the 25th I'll be back at some point. |
