I got tired of the handguards getting pulled away from the grip so I went to the hardware store and spent about $4 for stainless hardware. I had an old set of bar ends lying around which can be had on ebay for about $8. They are pretty much universal. I used stainless steel hardware in 1/4 18 thread and the button head washer is also stainless. Once tightened the had guards will not "break" away. Cheap and free just like me... |

I like the original design for what it is. Two light drops and an actual wipe out, all off road playing around, and the guards have done well. On the wipe out a bar end popped out and disappeared but they have protected the levers well. It helps that I keep my levers at mx bike tightness. Just loose enough to get forced to move in a fall. Haven't found them to pop while riding, even off road. Still always nice to have options so thanks for sharing. (Message edited by miamiuly on June 08, 2008) |

Rwcfrank: nice XS cafe racer on your website! I have to agree with Miamiuly about the stock uly bar ends protecting the bike. They are designed to be breakaway which takes a lot of the brunt of a fall. (I carry a spare, it cost about $2) |

Growl, thanks for the props on the XS650, My riding is all road so if I have to take off a mirror in traffic I dont want to leave any parts behind....Besides, I keep them tight but no too tight to break away. The nut inside is only held by a rubber donut that expands as you tighten. |

My pictures are not very good either, but here's mine with a BMW throttle lock on the right and matching weight on the left. I used all Stainless hardware also.

Thats nice! I just drilled two small holes inboard on the guard, and use a small black cable tie to "stitch" the guards around that little button. Worked fine so far... |
