Any recent mods done to it? You didn't give us much info to work on. |

http://www.mikuni.com/tg_backfires_in_exhaust.html TRY THIS, my m2 is popping when i close the throttle at high rpm, but i just added a bunch of plates to my supertrapp and a force winder intake, if you open the exhaust it can cause it, or if you have an exhaust leak, |

My M2 was real bad this spring. Turned out to be fouled plugs. Try a new set and see if that helps. |

Has forcewinder intake, oilcooler, vance hines exhaust. The bike ran fine until two weeks ago. After the first time it started running poorly I put new plugs on the bike. I met friends for a back road ride, 3 miles into the ride the bike started backfiring ,cutting out and sputtering again. The tack was jumping all over. I headed back home, a couple of miles down the road into the return trip it started running fine, then a couple more miles it started running poorly again. So in short it runs good for a while then it begins running poorly as described repeating this process over and over any help please 01 M2 |

This does sound like an electrical problem. Joe |

Mike Read the battery voltage with everything off, then read it with it running something over 2000 rpm. A well charged battery should have 12.6 volts, with the engine running it should be in the 13 volt range and above 2000 rpm it should at least be in the 14 volt range. Joe |

I second the comment on the switches. I removed mine (clutch and side stand). One less thing to worry about. |

I had my clutch and sidestand safety switches bypassed at the same time for a while the first year I got my bike. I found out it's entirely possible to push the start button while you're standing next to the bike and have it almost take off in gear and almost fall off it's kickstand while you're leaving work with people watching. I got that clutch switch rewired back in right away. |

To become dependent on things to make you safe just tends to dumb down the species. Motorcycling is a thinking game and must start before you get on the bike. If you don't believe that, you haven't had someone pull out in front of you. Just to say I didn't see you, oh yea the head light was working. Joe |

I never touch the starter button unless I am on the bike with the stand up. The X1 vibes too much to be left unattended at idle. I got into the habit of not touching the starter unless on the bike from the MANY times that I would come out of some place and find that someone had been screwing with my bike and left it in gear. It was just something about that sporty. no other bike I have ever had was molested to the extent that my old '79 was. Pumping the throttle until the bowl is empty was another favorite trick assholes would pull on me. damn..... sorry about the rant. |

A thought... Cutting out, backfiring, "The tack was jumping all over." These are similar symptoms to what I had when the wire leading from the CPS wore through right where the harness touches the swingarm. Mine only had 5k on it at the time... The main difference to yours... while mine appeared to run 'better' at higher rpms, it still wasn't right. I could feel it missing every now and then. Discovered I could bounce up and down on it and make it spit and sputter... fixed the wire and rerouted the harness a bit. No problems since. JJJ '00 M2 |

Safety??? You can make all the safety/idiot proof devices in the world. However, the world just continues to build a better idiot. Safety devices just make people think less about what they are doing. They give people a fals sense of being invincible. There is no replacement for patients and common sense. I have not had either switch on my bike for 5 years. I NEVER start the bike without holding in the clutch or free rolling the bike a bit first. |

Exactly how idiot proof do things have to be? None of my previous stick shift cars until the STI required that the clutch be depressed for the starter to work. My wifes Porsche (with an automatic, no less) won't start unless your foot is on the brake. |
