Hello Ulysses side of Badweb !! I have been hangen out on the XB side for a while. Would like to get some comments on the purchase for an 08 Ulysses. I got an 07 XB12R and have had been wanting to add a 1125 since last Oct to the stable. BUT riding home from work today I have realized that the 1125 may help me get into situations easier that I have a hard time staying away from with the XB12R. (Am not 16 anymore type of actions)(dont want to get into all that) (and will be keeping the XB12R) I dont want a cruiser or a metric bike and want to keep it Buell. So just looking for thoughts on the Ulysses! Thanks, C. | ||

If I catch what you're saying, you are hoping the Uly will help you act like more of a grown up?? I have ridden several different good bikes, 10K'ish miles a year for several years now, and have put 3K+ on mine over the last few weeks since I bought it. I got my first ticket in a decade aboard the Uly. Need less to say, I, as well as the GA state patrol, think you're theory has holes  ... Fun bike to ride... | ||

I've never ridden an R, but I expect that it's not all that different from an X. The R's got to be better still on the street for being lower to the ground, and the X is probably more serviceable two-up, if that's in your equation. And there's the off-road thing, which I love about my X, but I'm not sure I couldn't do nearly as much on an R. I understand what you're saying about getting into situations (I'm 55 soon and my X keeps turning me back into my 16-year-old self), but aren't these two bikes just too similar? | ||

With the possible exception of the Blast, there isn't a Buell made that will do much for taming the inner teen ager. | ||

If you think the R and X are "just too similar", you have just confirmed your admission that you haven't ridden an R.  If fact, you REALLY should ride both of the Rs just for the experience. I was truly surprised how different they are from the Lightnings, CityXs, etc. Now the 12R and 1125R WOULD be "just too similar" from my limited experience. Just that the 146 hp would get you into trouble that much quicker. But the ergos and handling are VERY similar. | ||

In the ten years I was riding Beemers, I was never stopped by the police. The third day on the Uly - 62 in a 45 mph work zone. I swear, it felt like I was only doing 40. | ||

A long time ago (more the 16 years) I thought buying a Harley will get me away from trouble. Last year I got my first speeding ticket. It was in Iowa (69 in a 55 zone)on a rented Harley. Last May I got my Uly, and all of a sudden, the need for speed came back. In April this year, I was invited to a Track day in Austria. I rode the 1125 and guess what, I will add one to my stable next year. But I will mainly use it for Track days. The Uly is the best all around bike I ever owned. And it is fast as well. Don't get me wrong, I still love my Road King and enjoy riding it. It is not the bike that gets you in trouble, it is the person riding it. Ride safe Werner | ||

Barker made the switch (addition) of a Uly to his stable. With every stop last weekend, his thoughts of turning his 9R into a dedicated track weapon grew. There is little that the X can't do that the R could. There is much that the X can do that the R can't. I think you'll find that the X will get taken out more than the R will were you to add it to your garage. | ||

I dont know about more responsible.... I do know that there is damned less law enforcement out on the trails and forest service roads than on the paved arterials that scar and cut the landscape | ||

I got an 07 XB12R and have had been wanting to add a 1125 since last Oct to the stable. I flirted with similar thoughts when the 1125 came out. I have a Uly. I got to ride the 1125 last fall at VIR when Buell started doing the Inside Pass events. I came away knowing the Uly was the bike I should have. It wasn't because the 1125 isn't a great bike. I had fun riding it around VIR, it corners like a dream, and is fast as hell. But the truth of all XB marketing hit home. I can't ride an 1125 at 170mph on the street (in truth I can't ride that fast even on the track.) And to get that extra 50 mph that I can't use, I'd have to give up a bike that is more comfortable, gets 20 mpg better mileage, has bags, can deal with crappy roads, and requires less maintenance. It just didn't make sense. Now if I wanted to race on the track or the back roads, it would be a different story. But I'm the kind of person who will hope on the bike before sun up, and show back up at home around midnight with an extra 700 miles on the clock. The comfort matters. The mileage matters. | ||

Here is sumthin 4 ya 2 chew on: Sensible Barker says  The uly is good on gas, easy o ride and very comfortable for me and the wife and all of our luggage. and,,,, Crazy Barker says  On the dragon, I feel faster on my stock 06 Uly than I do on my race kitted and lightened 9R. Since I got it (3 weeks ago) I have done more wheelies on my uly than I have in the past year on my 9R. | ||

harleywern, i know your not necessarily talking about your roadking about getting you into trouble. but i still can't get over the guy i was following on the cherrycola hwy who was on a road king and i was on the xt. it is the rider and not the bike that can get you into trouble. the only way that i was able to redeem myself was when i came up on a group of riders heading back to greenville and some were cruisers and the other's were these young squids with their skinny girlfriends with the tattoos above the crack of the butts, jeans and tennis shoes. i came up on them outta no where and the first chance i get i'm getting away from them when to my surprise a few of them decide to follow my lead and numerous times i walked away from them until we got into the next town. but it was a good feeling being on the xt with all the baggage and the wife on the back and just sneak up then leave them wondering what had happened in a matter of a couple minutes. it can handle just like anything else out there imo. try it, you'll like it. | ||

nevrenuf, you are right. That's the reason why I will keep my Uly, my Road King and add the 1125 to my collection. I can assure you, it is possible to go fast on the Road King as well. | ||

I can assure you, it is possible to go fast on the Road King as well. I will second that. I rented a Road King for a trip to Colorado last year and was surprised at how much pull it had. It was comfortable too. I got off it after one 600 mile day and still felt fresh enough to flatten a shed load of beer. |
