I stopped by Joe's (usapitbulls) house last night, he was curious about the XB..... maybe some of the rest of you are also..... the new motor has more "snap" than an old tube frame X1 with the race kit. second gear throttle feels (and acts...) like first. easily clutches up third gear wheelies at 55mph struggles at 60mph (but doable) {realize I don't mean lifting the front wheel a few inches....I am talking standing the bike on it's tail} I did a 78 mph power wheelie coming on the gas over a slight crest in the road that has never threatened launch before......big fun, need camera! I am sure this is wheelbase related.... I ran hwy 5 (closest thing to twisties we have aroud here) six times last night....this thing loves pulling out of the corners, wheelies on the power between gears through fourth. No downshifting necessary. powerslides in ANY gear torque on demand...... the motor drops to Idle earily fast, thought it would stall a few times, but levels out at about 1100.....I need to turn it down a tad (been too busy riding it). Fuel consumption has gown down predictably.....riding around in the mountains of Colorado this past weekend I experienced 58mpg on the day, I thought some thing was wrong (read LEAN)..... Here in KC it has been more on the average of approximately 38mpg which is a little higher than what I expected. really had no idea! seat of the pants gauging as follows: 1. It runs hotter, I mean seat temp is up at least 15 degrees, should drop a few when I switch to syn...noticeable but not unbearable! I figure it this way: anyone smiling this much should have wet balls. 2. It runs through every gear much faster...I think personally it's most noticeable in fifth, where you can whack the throttle at any RPM and it doesn't hesitate to start pulling. astonished at how soon I was out of gear. 3. Top speed has increased from an indicated 132-3mph to an indicated 138-9. Joe can Verify as we raced 'em last night(more on that soon enough). I assume that it's because the motor is making more horsepower at any given rpm that the higher top speed is possible. RPM limited.... 4. loud! no really loud! LOUD, did I say LOUD? loud...I mean LOuD.......Loud enough that all the Harley guys that are usually afraid to let go of their handlebars are waving now, loud! 5. It needs a six speed......fifth gear doesn't "feel" like the highway lump along gear anymore, small changes in throttle position are clearly felt through the suspension. 6. It vibrates like a quarter bed at the hourly don-tel motel, don't ask me how I know, as it's also called the WON-TEL motel as for the racing. If I can sneak out of the office early enough I may run by KCIR before the Brag Meeting tonight.....possible but not likely...I would love to have a timeslip for this thing before I blow it up! anyhow, as I said I stopped at Joe's and we went for a spin, Me on his force piped XB9r (it's true, blue is slower) and him on my XB12NR. which worked out great because this gave us both some comparison riding. I hadn't been on an XB in a couple of months so I was wondering how much my judgement may have been clouded by separation. we broke south and started winding them up. I followed Joe. As he's going through the gears, I can see him throttle chopping, measuring the torque difference....then he winds it up and lets it come back down. and again he winds it up.......all the while I am feeling out Old Blue...It would have been nice to have had a stock XB in the mix, because I was surprised by the torque his bike was exhibiting, I've seen the charts so I know the pipe and PCIII combo is good for big numbers, but was suitably impressed with how hard his was pulling as well. (and two of these bikes "piped out" running side by side at speed is something you gotta hear to believe!) now for the roll-on deodorant testing.... side by side fifth gear roll-ons always left my bike conservatively ten to fifteen bike-lengths up when I bumped the limiter on Joe's. whether it was from 70 or 90, whitey just plain walked away from "blue in the face".....and like I said top speed was no contest he just kept on going....Joe told me that the big end on his was always around 130 He saw "near" 140 on mine I saw 131 on his..... for what it's worth. A really noticable difference in the two bikes was how smooth the injection on mine is....Joe has a LOT of 2500 rpm hesitation until it warms up. I think the time on the dyno that brian spent re-mapping my PCIII contributed greatly to it's smooth operation....mine admittedly idles a little rough.....but there really isn't any point in the rpm range where you feel any changes to the power curve. those who have ridden it may want to add their thoughts as I am sure people are curious for an "unbiased" opinion. I'll add more as I think of it, and get some timeslips as soon as humanly possible. |

You are coming to the meeting tonight right? I have a stock XB9r that you can try. I'll follow you on your bike. Real slow like. Don't worry about a thing. BLUE IS NOT SLOWER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Can't wait to see and hear it tonight!

almost forgot..... 100.9HP and 85 ft/lbs the bike is a '03 XB9R converted to a twelve by Nallin's Racing Head Services in Colorado (check the top of the page) consists of bored airhorn, throttle body, intake manifold, stage 3 headprep, 1200cc bore kit, force exhaust with Power commander III, high perf O2 sensor....and a crazy bastard behind the throttle.

Shazam, Above, you state "It runs hotter, I mean seat temp is up at least 15 degrees,". To what are you comparing? I used Blake's IR thermometer to measure my oil temperature when the ambient temperature here in Texas was averaging near 100dF and was surprised how cool the oil was (180 to 200dF). I had to literally close off air flow to the oil cooler opening to get the oil temps above 200dF ever. Even after a 20 mile ride, four drag races, and a 15 mile, 80 mph blast and then some city riding where the cooling fan came on, the oil never got any hotter than 208dF. No where near dangerous levels. Perhaps where our dangling participles are located relative to the engine heads may be giving the illusion of a hotter running engine? Keith |

I know the actual temperature of the seat on which I'm sitting has never gotten this hot in the twenty thousand miles I've been on this bike! I couldn't tell you what the temp of the seat (or rear cyl) was before the conversion as I never measured it. temperatures were about 85-90F last night I'll try and find an IR thermometer. we may have one here around the shop. I thought the Jet-Hot coated headers would help to keep the heat in the pipe but I seriously think it's an elevated head temp transferring... |

Ooh...very nice. What was the total cost of the conversion, Shazam? And did you ever find those accessories you were making for me? Give me a price! Bryan |

Yep, Sam stopped by last night for a little "My bike is now better than yours" hahahhahahaha! Yes, I must say WOW!!! As soon as we took off, I gave the throttle a little first gear blip and was suprised at the quickness and snappy response I got from the little XB now on steroids. This monster could have easily flipped if I wasn't careful. After a small trek down 169 hwy in Stanley we came back up heading north, at a high rate of speed, sure to get our licenses yanked if caught! Side by side Sams Nallinized big bore 1200 XB9R easily walked away from my Nallinized exhaust XB9R. Pulling all the way until around 138ish, I was busy looking for deer, and holding on, this bike pulls hard, but the glimpse I got was around 138ish. The coolest thing was the side by side riding. 2 XB9Rs with Nallin Exhaust systems, sounds WAYYYYYYY!!!!! Cool! You guys at Nallin did a great job. I now have some decisions to make! Let a guy with a White bike show me up..Yeah right! L8R, Joe |

GOD, I hate beating around the bush....I would say you need to talk to the boys at Nallin's simply because it will vary with Labor...I had a close friend R&R the motor from my bike (at a cost) sent the motor to Brian and Aaron complete. The rest they did....Brian is quoting 10 hours for tear down rebuild at $65 an hour. that is what I was charged. I had to buy some other bits and pieces along the way(crank bearing, and air filter come to mind, oh and plug wires....I'm sure they will turn up somewhere). everything else was as advertised.... ---$1000 for the bore kit. ---$1100 for the head work. I bought new heads and sold my old ones when they sent me the stageIII units ($500 for new, sold the "used" set for $400} ---$1350 for the force pipe and PC ---$650 Labor on the motor itself ---$375 for the boring of the throttle body and manifold (out-sourced) ---$37.50 for TPS reset at High Country HDB ---$50 miscellaneous gaskets and fittings... these are all advertised prices... I did not have any shipping charges due to the fact I conveniently had friends traveling through the area at the right times. there was also a charge for the shop time this past weekend.....dyno tuning. what's that? 4560 and change. I really hadn't anticipated spending this much on the project however, in the eye's of this keyholder it's been a real pleasure to say the least. and the bike's bad-ass too! Now if I could just get the flywheel ass'y from a twelve Bryan let me find them, they're yours for the hassle.

Hmm...I could see doing that in a year or two. Very, VERY nice numbers. Yes, more than you'd have spent on a XB12 all told, but better hp/torque, along with the higher revs. Could be a worthwhile kick-in-the-nads for a bike that's a couple years old, and a cheaper alternative to buying a new bike. Those boys at Nallins certainly know what they're doing.

Bryan, I did it a little at a time....heads in march....exhaust in june......it made it more feasible financially and I just paid as we went. The guys out there at Nallin's were real accomodating. there's another 6hp in a set of cams.....a little at a time..... |

Yes, more than you'd have spent on a XB12 all told I put a built 350 in a Vega once, practical ... no ... fun ... are you kidding! I don't think it's about cost (sure ya don't wanna go broke doin' it) it's more about hot roddin' what cha got ... Just wait until the first guy gets his XB12 and makes it into an XB1450!

I don't think the weight of the new pistons warranted any changes to the bottom end....this question is better posed to Aaron. That may be proprietary info, hahahahaha. |
