how old were they before you put them on the bike? Did you put them on the bike? I have a friend who I've seen with his three year old sandwiched in between he and his wife. Although I believe that is way too young I think my seven year old may be ready for some around town errand running. I didn't want to hijack the helmet thread going on right now but I'd like some input, (input, not argument, ya'll behave) on what type helmet, boots, leather and apparel and possibly some links to kids gear if you have 'em. I have a seven year old daughter and my wife shuns me when I bring it up. Thanks in advance for the knowledge. Michael | ||

I took my son on a long ride when he was around 8. The only problem was he kept falling asleep and I was afraid he was going to fall off. | ||

That sounds like a pretty good rule of thumb to me New12r. Not an issue for more since my son is 14 and as tall as I am. He's already talking about when he gets his Blast. My 17 year old takes his MSF course next weekend. Between the two of them I'm gonna have to chain my Blast to the garage wall. Seriously though, I'd say the children should be in the 11 or 12 age range. By then they can reach the pegs and helmets can be found that will fit them. | ||

My boy has just started coming on the back, since I got the TT, he'll be 9 in August, we got him a helmet no problem, Lazer do child sizes, good kit & keen prices too. We only do short runs but he loves it, one thing I'm looking to get though is a "Pillion Pal". It's like a belt with a grab handle on each side, just to make it a little easier for him to hold on. | ||

how old were they before you put them on the bike? I don't remember, but it was at the first opportunity. Did you put them on the bike? Yes with the two oldest, Uncle Charlie put the youngest to riding. | ||

That sounds like a good rule New12r. I'll need to fit her to the bike sometime. She's rather tall for her age. Mr. Grumpy how does that Pillion Pal work? Does it attach to the bike then belt the child in? I think I would have issues with that if in fact that's the way it works. God forbid something happen then the child is strapped to the bike and can't push away or get off. I fussed at my wife years ago for putting her thumbs through my belt loops on my sides. If we wrecked it could have ripped her thumbs off. I know, I know, coulda, woulda, shoulda, but precautions can be taken just in case. Thanks all for the input. | ||

The one I have goes around your waist and the passenger can hold on to the sides. It has "handles" that would be easy to let go of if needed. | ||

My kids were born in Asia and motorcycle is standard mode of travel, I know that is to young to ride here in the states but mine were riding with wife and I at just a few weeks. I dont know what the law requirements are here in U.S.A. | ||

Oh O.K. I gotcha, that makes better sense. Well I tried out the fit tonight and the other two had to pile on. The oldest can reach the pegs but it's not really a "solid" reach if that makes any sense and she's not really gung ho about it right now any way and I'm not going to push the issue. Looks like I may have three future riders though.  | ||

1.5 yrs  haven't left the yard, and won't for a long time. i might get him a dirt bike, but a street bike won't happen until he gets a license | ||

Matt, your little guy is Soooo cute!!! I started my son out on a dirt bike at 10 years old. We would also take him out on the street bike, on the back w/my hubby, at about the same age but he would start to fall asleep, so that was a little scary. | ||

I gave my son a dirt bike for his 6th birthday and we have had to fight to get him off it since. I agree with HDBob. My son used to scream bloody murder up until he was 2 if I didn't load him the back pack type thing we had at the time and carry him around while I mowed the lawn. Once I'd start he'd be asleep inside of 5 minutes. This was especially enjoyable on those July and August days here in FL as the mercury hit 100. I envision the same if he were to ride on the back of my bike. I think 11-12 is probably a smart and safe age to take them on rides of any length. |
