Would putting a straight pipe off the header on my 08 12s cause any damage to the motor? It would only be temporary since I am going to get either a drummer or spec ops. I realize it would be pretty loud, but oh well. I can't be without my ride for very long.

I rode mine for a few weeks w/o muffler while I was getting around to installing a new one. Didn't notice any difference other than a lot more noise.

Far as I could tell it wasn't as loud as opened up HD's. Even if you don't ride it you can start it up for a sec and listen at idle. VERY pronounced thumping exhaust pulses...

If you run with open pipes it will be fine as long as the Map is set up for it. Our shop bike is an open pipe bike and it runs alot stronger than it did with the factory muffler once reprogramed....

if you foul plugs there is an issue somewhere in your mapping or in the ignition system ( like bad wires which is common on xbs) or something else...

our bikes runs standing still, on the dyno, on drag strips, and on the street and has yet to foul plugs

On my 9 in the garage. It hurt my ears so I chose not to ride it and piss off everyone in the village:

use a 2" elbow off the header and purchase a length of straight pipe to run back, total cost from pep boys 8$ make sure you make some slotted cuts in the elbow to mimic your pipe so the clamp will "clamp"

1324,

It will be louder in the garage(or any enclosed area) than out in the open 'cause of the sound waves reverberating back.

That said, it's still stinkin' loud out in the open. : )

Anyone know which is louder, an uncapped 9 or 12? Same?

The difference between indoors and out with stock or the drummer is smaller than you'd think. There is a bit reverberation, but it is still nasty.

I'd guess the 12 would be louder just due to the larger displacement. Plus, per American Sport Bike's shootout, the 12 did perform louder than the 9 if memory serves me correctly.

Was referring to indoor vs. outdoor w/open exhaust.

Forgot about the American Sport Bike tests.

Checkout Summit or Jegs and get a baffle to put in your straight pipe to see if I helps with the power delivery and noise.

Rig up a small perforated core glasspack to work. They're cheap and usually work well.

A glasspack, you mean kind of like a Jardine?

We know that works, the trick with exhausts also lies in the length of the pipe
and resonating chamber so that the pulses help draw more air into the cylinder during
the brief period of overlap where the cams have both the intake and exhaust valves open.

You could luck out and have your bike perform better with a straight pipe or glass
pack of semi-random length, but the odds are against it.

If you just want to make your bike loud, you can gut about any muffler and install a
stopper to prevent a night stick from going in too far and be in business.

You should know that noise for the sake of noise is going to be the death of our sport
if we don't do what we can to stop it. The average person on the street actively HATES
the sound of all bikes with open pipes. They have shown this in many communities by
enacting laws that prohibit motorcycles or lay draconian noise limitations on motorcycles.
In CA over 5 years ago I was pulled over on several occasions to do a visual inspection
of my bike looking for "not for highway use" stamps on the exhaust etc.

That is the future for all of us....IF we allow it by refusing to police ourselves.

Yes, I know all the old hackneyed expressions: "if it's too loud..." but I'm just
trying to help save us from ourselves.
