So do you carry a tool bag or tool roll when you are out and about? Or do you only pack it when you are traveling distance? I'm in the process of assembling a small tool roll to carry with me. I already carry a backpack everywhere, so throwing a small roll of essential tools in it isn't a big deal. What do you carry in yours? I'm thinking adjustable wrench, small set of allen keys, couple of screwdrivers, vise grips, what else?

On my S2, I routinely carry a tool roll. Not, because it's unreliable! Just because I can fit tools in the storage area under/behind the seat. Also, because the tuber is much more repair friendly along the side of the road, than my XB. However, if the XB is going on a trip, I take the tool roll off of the S2 and put it in the saddle bags of the XB.

Off the top of my head, I can't tell you everything that is in my tool roll. It's mostly the bare essentials to fixing "likely" items along the road. Tools that I use on a regular basis.

Here is a partial list: leatherman (don't leave home without it!), 3/8" ratchet, 6" adjustable wrench, 4" extension, swivel, assorted sockets to fit main fasteners, torx bits w/adapter, and a couple of allen wrenches.

I also keep some other "repair items' in the fairing bags of the S2 (they also get transferred to the XB in the event of a trip). These include: tire plugs and tool, CO2 tire inflator with cartridges, plastic zip ties, a small roll of bailing wire, electrical tape, and a small roll of J-B weld (in a "tootsie roll" form, where all you do is cut a piece off and roll it between your fingers to mix).

I have luckily never needed to perform any major repairs along the road. Carrying all of that "stuff" with me is my insurance policy! : )

But, I have used most items carried, at one point or another, for either myself or others along the road.

You guys are prepared!

I just carry a pocketknife... and the only time my bike ever stopped dead and could have left me stranded, I was able to fix my bike with it... I cut and twisted the kickstand safety switch wires together.

Make sure you got a knife!

My Gerber multi-tool is always on my belt - comes from years as a concert rigger, I don't leave home without it!

In the tool roll: allen key for bodywork (bike-dependant size); torx key for bodywork (XB); multi-bit screwdriver with phillips and flat blade (I've got the HD version in my FLHP with the addition of torx bits, but it's too big for a Buell toolbag); whatever is stock in the Buell blue toolbag; a bouquet of zip-ties.

On longer trips I have a small (fits in the "glovebox" behind the S2 seat) Gear-ratchet set with a 1/4" ratcheting/reversible driver, socket bits from 1/4" to 9/16", and driver bits that include flat, phillips, hex and torx. It doesn't live on a bike though, because it's just too damned handy to have in the garage : )

I'd like to see a pic of that tool roll if you can post one. I'm not sure I could stuff much stuff into that storage area.

We won't talk about the 25-35Lb bag of tools I carried on one trip, which included two torque wrenches. Let's just say I could have done a major rebuild on the side of the road if I had to. Now I just carry a few things starting with the cell phone.

Add to that list a 10mm wrench (battery terminals), a set of gapped spark plugs and some duct tape. I just stick some strips of duct tape under the seat. Also a siphon hose.

Good thread! Made me look, too.

I rarely need it, but I'm going to add a couple things. Already put new batteries in the maglight.: )

There must be a little vibration because those tools have been in there 13-14 years, and they're still shiny.

It fits nicely under the seatback of my RS.

For the 10mm, I keep my "battery" wrench wrapped in electrical tape except for the head. Just in case. And my keychain has one of those goofy-but-useful LED flashlights on it for those "where did that bolt go" moments...

There are some things that will keep carrying tools to a minimum:

Drill a small hole above your clutch cable lever end so you can really lube the end which stops breaking clutch cables in the middle of no where ...

If you clean and gap your spark plugs every 5K, spark plugs are never an issue ...

If you exhaust system is installed properly and check it every 5K your exhaust system will never be an issue ...

If you make sure every thing is kept tight by checking every 5K, parts falling off or getting loose on a Ride are no longer and issue ...

In the 103,988.75 mile on my 97S3T it has been on the side of the road broke 3 times, 1st; front motor mount broke(warranty issue), 2nd: rear drive belt broke(should have replaced at 50K, but "i" wanted to see how long it would last which was 61K),
3rd: was the clutch cable because "i" had not drilled the clutch end lube hole ...

Buellistic...

You are right on the 5K service things, but the only time I've been on the side of the road was when my temp sensor crapped out, causing the FI to run rich resulting in fouled plugs! Replaced them and got back to where I could get repairs.

Yo_barry:

"OK !!!", another thing "i" do every 5K is to put 5 oz. STP gas teatment in a full tank of HI-TEST gas ...

These TEMP Sensors are automotive stuff ...

If you have trouble with them see if you can cross referance to another brand ...
