So today it was raining on and off all day while I was at work. Before leaving for home, I gear up with the rain suit and trek off for the hour ride back to my house on my newly acquired Uly. Traffic is heavy, road is wet with puddles in spots but the bike, brakes, and tires work flawlessly (except for when I rounded a curve with crosswalk strips across the road - tires broke free a bit but it was entirely my fault and lack of experience - so now I know that road paint is slick when wet.) I start taking the back roads to avoid some traffic and gain some confidence in myself and the bike in the rain. It starts coming down rather hard but no problems or worries. About 3 miles from home (from a 40 mile trip) I stop at a light in a line of cars. The lights turns green and I let the clutch out and roll on the throttle in unison and the bike "pops" then stalls! WTF! My take offs may not be the smoothest, but I've never blown one yet! So I hunt for neutral and restart the bike getting back on my way, all the while the rain was steadily coming down harder. I get to my house and motion to one of my children to open the garage door with the remote in the house while I wait in front of the garage - in the pouring rain. The door opens and I paddle and feather the clutch to get up the slight hill into the garage and it does it again! It backfired so I pull in the clutch again but this time it seemed like it didn't want to stay running! Now I think I recall reading the plugs get wet in bad weather and such. Briefly looked under the bike and noticed the plugs are tucked up underneath somewhere I think. I'm thinking a plug wire is loose and allowing water penetration but can't be sure. Suggestions anyone??? | ||

I think you are on the right track. To find out for sure take off the airbox cover, the air box lid, the air box base plate. That is where your answer will be. You can see both wires and coils without disturbing them to know if that is the problem. Look closely at the front wire before you move it. If it is laying across the idle adjuster cable it can wear through and when it gets wet it shorts out there. | ||

SAME THING HAPPENED TO ME. CHECK THE PLUG WIRES AT THE COIL. USE LOTS OF ELECTRICAL GREASE WHEN REINSTALLING. SHOULD SOLVE THE PROBLEM.  | ||

This seems to be common on Ulys. I've experienced the coughing and rough running in the rain. I need to pull my plug wires and seal them as suggested. | ||

Buy a set of magnacor wires and a fresh set of plugs. Use dilectric grease and make sure they snap together tight. This way you won't have to go back and do it again. | ||

Interesting. I had a problem with heavy rain and rough running on my xb9 on two separate occasions. It didn't seem to be due to fouled plugs or water on the plugs. I think it may have been water getting into the fuel through the air scoop and/or condensation on the inside of the frame/fuel cell. I just got an XT, so far no problems in rain, but I haven't ridden it a typical FL summer downpour yet. | ||

Maybe it's an '06 thing, but I haven't had an issue at all with mine, and lately it seems I only ride it in the rain. I opened up the airbox to mimic the '07 box, but with more holes (got a little happy with the 7/8" drill bit, lol) and no issues. I'm debating going back in there, and putting a drain hole in one of the rear lower corners of the baseplate just in case any water does get sucked into the housing...but my drive to do it is low, because the darn thing just isn't acting up. |
