I have been a huge fan of buell performance for a long time. I recently did a Thunderbolt conversion (including cams) on my 2000Sporty and before I start her up and break the engine in I was hoping to adjust my cv carb with the stock buell s3t settings. If anyone could be so kind as to drop a line or two with the info I would really appreciate the info!

Is the engine displacement the same as before the conversion? What's different, more compression, freer flowing intake and exhaust?

What exact carb does the Sporty have, more specifically, why are you seeking S3T carb settings? Does it have a carb from the same year S3T or are you pumping up the stock carb?

If it's the same carb as before, did the bike run OK then? If so, it may be OK with the conversion up to the point where the engine breathes more. At that point, you'll have to determine if it needs more fuel for its greater air gulping capability.

So, if it's a Kehein(sp?), what needle does it have?
If it's a NOKK, that needle might work OK as a ballpark.

And if you find it's a little flat in the mid-range response, add a 0.010" washer under the needle. If that helps but you think it could use more poop in that range, add another same size washer.
You can probably see where this is going. you want to add washers until it starts feeling boggy in the mid-range and then go back to the last setting.

You're asking your question under the right topic of the KV, but there has not been a lot of recent discussion on jetting the CV-40's.

If you search just the KV for the words "main jet" you'll find a lot of old threads on the topic, some dating back to 7 or 8 years.

Here is a typical thread with some number that will probably work well for your Sportster with the later heads.

http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/384 2/157526.html

My 2000 M2 was stock other than a low restriction air cleaner. And that would be basically the same engine you have now.

That ran perfect with the stock #195 main jet and a #45 slow speed jet (not a #48 as I said in one post in the thread above, that was a mistake on my part).

I changed the stock #42 slow speed to a #45 and it made it a much better ride at lower speeds. Those were set way too lean to pass to emission tests. If you drill and remove the cap on the idle mixture screw and set it at 2-1/2 turns, that the #45 jet will get you real close to right.

When you remove the cap from the idle mixture screw, just drill a small 1/16" or so hole just until the drill pierces cap. Don't drill very deep or you'll damage the adjusting screw. Screw a small sheet metal screw in the hole and you pull the cap off with a pliers.

You can read the details on doing that here:

http://www.nightrider.com/biketech/hd_cv_mods.htm# slide_detail

I would hold off on drilling the slide or playing with changing or raising the needle until you try it with just the recommended 195/45 jets. If you go with a lower restriction muffler or air cleaner system you may want to look at doing some of the other mods later.

That NightRider page has some good info on tuning and trouble shooting the CV-40, a lot of it is aimed at the EVO engines, there is a little for the Sportsters too though and a lot of the EVO info applies to the XL's too.
