So - played hooky this afternoon and enjoyed a spirited ride (ok - I lied - I thrashed her). On my way home I got stuck in severe traffic. I was keeping an eye on engine temp - what is the safe range? Mine hit 195 in stop/go traffic (all first gear stuff in 65 degree weather). At what point (engine temp wise) should I consider pulling over and having a non-adult cold drink? | ||

I have hit 210 degrees in stop-n-go with ambient temperatures in the low 70's. During break-in period. Cooling seems to have improved as the bike broke in. Currently at 2500 miles it tends to run in the 179-185 with ambient temperatures in the 70's. Today it was in the low 80's and got stuck in stop'n'go traffic after running it hard and the CT ran at 189-193. I have a voltage gauge mounted on the bike and above 185 CT I have to keep the RPM between 1500-2000 to keep it above 12.5 volts. Keeping the RPM's in the 1500-2000 range is not easy as the throttle is very sensitive in this range. I'm getting better at it, but it's real touchy as it wants to rev higher than that. Wished I had a service manual as I would just turn the idle up a bit to find the point where it stayed at 12.5 volts. | ||

I wouldn't even think about it until it passes 220 degrees. If you check the owners manual table 6, it says normal operating temperature range is 140-220 degrees and overtemperature threshold is 230 degrees. Temps in the 200-220 range are completely normal. At what point (engine temp wise) should I consider pulling over and having a non-adult cold drink? Of course my 996 ain't an 1125r.But i've been told not to worry by one of thee most reputable mechanics(Bruce Meyers).Told me his race bikes routinely run at 260.Anti-freeze/anti-boil prevents boiling to those temps.I worry when my engine can't reach operating temps of 180 degrees. I'm told oil has an operating temp where it works best is minimum around 180.And you have to remember the fuel injection,if it thinks the engine is in a cold startup situation,it'll run rich according to it's mapping | ||

Sez here that the normal operating range is: 140 - 220 F and overtemp is 230F (lamp is lit). | ||

At what temperature do the radiator fans turn on? It seems pretty obvious that if the engine temperature is less than that, you have no worries about overheating. | ||

I saw mine get up to 185˚ or 187˚when I was in Texas. Ambient was 91˚. Fans did run constantly, stop and go would suck at that temp. Not worried about Summer. I think the Elves built a good cooling system. Z | ||

My SV the fans don't kick on till 210. I wouldn't worry about temps till 220 or so, if they keep going up at that point, do something. | ||

The Aprilia RSV fans turn on at 205F, similar to the SV. It's curious that the Buell 1125 turns on the fans at such a low temp. Maybe it's designed that way to keep heat off the rider? | ||

It may also have to do with the radiators being mounted in line with the bike, so at slower speeds, there is little to no airflow over them. |
