im just getting my xb9s ready to ride and im not sure what type of oil to use. lots of people seem to use mobil 1 but others say mobil 1 v-twin. can you use regular car oil 20w-50? or does it have to be the ''v-twin'' oil? what about other oil options, and what about tranny oil? still not sure after searching what to use. i thought i might as well ask before i put in oil that shouldnt actually be in there. thanks for the help

No car oil. If your in a pinch diesel oil works.

That said, I only use HD Syn3 20-50. I've heard Mobile1 or Amsoil are great choices also.

Just for future reference, I only use HD Formula+ in my primary.

Just follow what the manual says. API "C" oil in the correct vis. for your ambient temperatures. More than likely it will be in the 10 to 20w-50 range. I've used Mobil1 15w-50 for over 5 years and it works great. And it works great in the primary as well so you'll only need to buy ONE oil type!

"Motorcycle" specific oils are for those engines that require a JASO standard rather than the API standard. All Buell motorcycles (not sure about the new wc Buells) require API "C" oils.

Car oils work great as long as you follow the required standard -- note, most oils DO NOT carry the API "C" rating (they are typically "S" only) so you'll have to read the labels carefully. Delo and Rotella are also good for those that like non-syn. oils.

I would never put regular automotive oil in a Bike. For what I have read Bike engine oil has higher tolerances.

I have used Amsoil 20w50 for my last oil change.

Don't use Mobil 1 in the primary.

Use this, and only this in the primary. It's cheap and is made specifically for the primary.



Use what you want in the engine.

+1 on the Formula +. It's only 7 dollars. H-D dealers are everywhere, even if they don't sell Buell, they'll have it.

Pwnzor, I think you should specify to not use Mobil 1 Gear Oil (75W90) in the tranny. The sulfuric compounds in the GL-5 gear oil are the ones reputed to eat the stators.

Mobil 1 15W50 motor oil is fine in the tranny.

I don't care, this subject is so tired anyway. Everybody use what you like.

FYI: the mainshaft nut is 1 3/16" with left hand threads, while the crankshaft nut is 1 1/8" with standard thread. The stator bolts are T-20 Torx, be careful not to strip those heads out, because it's too tight to fit a tap handle in between the shifter shaft and crankshaft. When replacing the primary cover, make sure to follow the correct sequence and apply the proper torque. New gaskets all around, and while you're at it, replace the shifter shaft seal, mainshaft and crankshaft seals too. Clean everything and soak in Formula + before reinstalling. Be sure to use plenty of red loctite where applicable.

Look folks - it's very easy. Use what the oil company says to use! Mobil specifically says DO NOT USE THEIR GEAR OIL IN ANY PRIMARY CASE THAT IS SUPPOSED TO USE MOTOR OIL. Remember that HD specifies the use of engine oil (and other HD oil) for use in the primary. It's amazing how this gets blown out of proportion. If you have ANY question on what to use then check with the oil mfg. Redline, amsoil, mobil, royal purple, etc all make excellent oils for all locations of your Buell. Whom would you rather trust, a tribologist or an anonymous poster? Caveat emptor indeed!

C compression ignition

I used only hydrogenated oil containing trans-fats and swine lard with a little acetone mixed in.

Teflon tape can dislodge and form clots your intestines. You should never use it for cooking unless it's specifically called for.
