Hi all:

I just got a '97 ST3 for $4,400 on eBay and I love it. It is my first non-project motorcycle (1st bike that didn't come in several boxes).

Is there a way to use a bike lift (I'm thinking of buying one from Sears/Craftsman) to lift my '97 ST3? How do you deal with the lack of a frame where the lift normally makes contact?

Are the footpegs a specific Buell item or will standard H-D pegs interchange? My wife/passenger hates the vibration that comes from the bare aluminum pegs and new Harley take-off stuff is almost free.

I'll have more questions. Thanks for being here!

Scott the bike lift from sear's won't work for you.You can look up pitbull stands or Handy Industries for stands. As far as peg's are concerned the HD peg's should work and I'm interested in your aluminum ones if you are getting rid of them let me know.Congrats on the bike you will enjoy.

I have an '02 S3T.

Unfortunately, I ended up with the PM wheels and didn't know until after I bought the bike that they are not clear coated. I went to kowa tools - because I wanted to be able to lift the front end to facilitate wheel cleaning/polishing, and be able to remove the forks. Glad I got the headstock stand. That stand can not be used without a rear stand installed first - because the rear stand has 2 contact points (swingarm) and the front headstock stand has only one. Always be on a level surface when using stands. Can you say "CRASH!!!!??". Any ways, that's what I have for a set up - works well for maintenence.

How many miles are on your bike? Is it injected?

Weren't all pre '99 Buells carbureted? I always thought The '99 models X1s, S3s introduced injection.

What are you usuing on the wheels to clean them?
I have an 02 S3T also. It has the PM wheels. They're good looking but a pain to keep clean.

I have the pm wheels on my 02 M2 and I use Wizard's metal polish. It works great. I got it at the Harley dealer.

Ive used Never Dull wadding polish, it works but takes more elbow grease than I care to use.

My '97 is carbureted. I had been looking specifically for a '98 or earlier bike to avoid FI. My bike also has PM wheels, but mine appear to have been powdercoated black (doesn't look like paint). I'm going to post a pic of the exhaust in a few days when I have time, in the hope that someone can ID it for me. It looks like a complete aftermarket system, as the muffler is welded to the collector. It's a loud megaphone with writing on it that says something like "Megs" in fancy script. Previous owner put a sticker on the shock that reads "Streetfighter Exhaust". Is that the brand name? I've never heard of it.

Lastly, can someone confirm what I'm guessing? The exhaust makes some loud popping when decelerating with the throttle closed completely from anywhere in the bottom 1/2 of the RPM range. Do I need to raise the needle in the slide or is this an issue involving the pilot jet?

Thanks again!

Scott,
Check for an intake leak.
Popping on decel indicates a lean condition.
Check the carb seal and the 2 intake manifold seals.
I use starter fluid after the bike is warmed up.
Just spray it around the respective seals, if the rpm changes, you've got a leak.
I've heard of using carb cleaner but I've never used it my self.

Scott,
I've put the Sportster gushy pegs on my 99 s3t for the driver, so I know they'll fit but I'm not sure of the passenger pegs?
If your exhaust is loud w/little backpressure it will gargle with a pop ocasionally whem decellerating if thats what your talking about. If it's loud backfireing proceed as the others have said. ie intake leak / ignition check etc
I use mothers aluminum polish on my pm's and anything clearcoated aluminum.

With the bike up on both stands - I sit at the rear / front, apply mothers to a soft towel, and sit and spin. Lots easier than trying to get the hands down, around, under, etc.

Mothers seems to leave protective barrier that lasts for at least a little while.

Spray on 50/50 simple green when the brake dust starts to build - don't wait till the wheels are coated in dust though - hose off with cold water, and towel dry - keeps them looking great!
