Guys I need help getting my XB9R running right before this season hits. It is stock except for a Jardine slip on. It does not idle worth a crap and just seams to have poor performance. I have had it to a dealer several times and it does not seem to come back running any better. Also the other day I went to start it and when I pulled the clutch in with it in gear it wanted to take off on me when I went to start it. Anyone in Ohio that is willing to help me get this bike straightened out will be my new best friend. I really like this bike, but if I can not get it right I think I might end up getting rid of it. Let me know if you can help! I can bring the bike to you or you can come here. I really just want someone that knows Buells to look at it and help me out. |

How cold has it been when you have tried to ride it? I know my 9r up in cleveland hates cold weather. you have to let them warm up. my bike would die if i started it up and got on it. |

Telling people you are located in New Concord may get the offer of help from a neighbor. Chris |

It was running poorly when it went away for it's winter nap. The issue with starting in gear just happened the other day, it was cold then. I am in New Concord, Ohio if that helps. |

let me guess.....when you start it up the first thing you do is start reving the motor right? if the answer is yes, you need new spark plugs. also, i'd bet your clutch is out of adjustment. |

Trying to start a cold bike in gear is bad practice regardless of the weather. For one thing, a multi-plate wet clutch will have a lot of drag just because of the high oil viscosity when the oil is cold. That's not good for the starter or battery. For another, it's a good idea to break the plates free when starting up first time in the season by manually putting the trans in gear with the engine off and pushing the bike with the clutch lever all the way in to the grip. The idea is to distribute a little oil film among all the clutch plates before you start the engine. This should make the first gear engagement a little smoother. |

Badlionsfan, I think maybe you need not make any assumptions. I do not rev the bike up when starting it. This is not my first bike I actually own three right now. This is my first XB. The plugs were replaced near the end of last season. Sparky, I did free roll the bike several times with the clutch engaged before I attempted to start it. |

just starting with the most likely culprit birel, no need to get defensive. these bikes are very touchy at start up, even people with previous motorcycle exp can get bit by the fouled plug. anyway, what rpm does it idle at? it supposed to be at 1050 rpm. another to check is your battery and battery cable connections. what has the dealer said they've done. if a tps reset wasn't done, that could be it if all the above checks out. |

Lost_in_ohio, reset his LFV back to 100 also, then let it learn. TPS calibration, LFV reset, and idle adjustment is a good place to start. The muffler will skew the LFV since the ECM is not mapped for it, but you have to live with it unless you dyno & remap. (Message edited by xb9 on March 21, 2008) |

From your answer you do not want to take me up on my offer. You can purchase the software with cable from American sport bike or you can use ECMspy which is free and purchase or make a cable to connect to your ecm. Or I can run out and do it for you for free. |

There! Fixed it for you! I've fixed SV-650's, ZR-7's, XR-650's, an URL, a VW Westfalia van, a vstrom, a sportster, an S2, and an ultra glide so far. At least that I remember. I stopped and tried to help an R1, but there was nothing I could do for it besides offer sympathy... it had a sickening sounding crank knock. I love fixing stuff and helping people.
