I know both pipes have a large following here. I was wondering if anyone here has tried both. My concern is how do they compare as far as loudness at part throttle. I have no problem with loud at WOT, but it would be nice if it was reasonable at cruising speed. I am guessing the Special Op's may be quieter at part throttle because it retains the interactive valve. Can anyone tell me how they compare? | ||

IMO (and you're gonna get a bunch), the Drummer has a lower tone, where the special ops has a higher pitched note. if you do a search on youtube you can see (and hear) vids with all the different aftermarket exhausts for the buell xb. | ||

I think most of the sound/video clips are made showing full throttle passes. I'm more concerned with what it sounds like cruising at steady throttle on the freeway. Loud at full throttle is no problem. Also, I doubt the little speakers on my laptop will reproduce the sound faithful to what it would sound like in real life. | ||

I have a Spec Ops on my XB9S, it's loud, real loud. I actually had to have a little chat with my boss today because I interrupted a meeting when I started my bike up at lunch. I wasn't even revving it, just letting it warm up. I was parked in a garage directly underneath the meeting room. I am now going to park elsewhere. I wasn't in trouble, my boss thought it was funny, but I think it got on the nerves of the VP, who was running the meeting. | ||

The Special ops is very loud at cruise. It also has a strange resonance that I found I was unable to live with. I have not heard a Drummer, but it has some sound absorbing material inside it, so it should be quieter. | ||

I'm running a Drummer on my 9R. It's definately waaaaaay louder than stock, and way better performance IMO. Cruising speed is fairly loud but not unbearable, a full day hiway riding will get your ears buzzing. BTW I'm still trying to remove the giant grin from my face after the stock to Drummer switch, and that was in July. My $.02  | ||

Yeah, I think the Drummer will be a bit quieter than the Spec Ops. I have a Spec Ops and it not much quieter than my buddies D&D. | ||

Building one myself sounds tempting. I do have an extra xb12 muffler I bought off E-bay for a core to send in. I'm sure I could figure out how to tear the guts out and weld it back up, but I would like to know a little more about how to make it a little quieter than that. | ||

+1 for Special Ops! Love it. Bit loud for alot of people, but its perfect for me because i dont care what my neigbors think when i fire it up at 4:20 in the morning. I acually have a neighbor(friend) who uses me as an alarm clock. When he hears my bike, he knows its time to get up!  | ||

I heard through the grapevine that Odie (of Special Ops fame) is working on a quieter SpecOp piped design for those of us with touchy neighbors or sound restrictions from the Forest Service or the like. Personally, I like will be getting a SpecOps but have held off due to the hope for a quiet version so the old folks around here don't have conniptions when I come and go. Hint-hint, nudge-nudge Odie ;) I also like the sound of a SpecOps, and I have a lot of respect for Odie himself and he has treated the people I know very well. Nothing against Drummer mind you -- never really heard anything negative from them. It usually seems to come down to sound or gearhead discussions, the latter not really mattering to me. my .02, cheers!} | ||

as noted above, Kevin (Drummer) and Odie (Special Ops) are both loved here on BadWeb. I have never come across a negative thread about either one of them. Me personally, I fell in love with the Drummer http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/290 431/333049.html?1202777762 one aspect that I admired about the Drummer was that I could just easily cruise around with a nice deep rumble and not be obscene, but once you cracked those RPMs that puppy would scream. Best example was a day that I was out cruising and a young boy walking with his mother heard me coming. he stopped and looked and started waving and jumping up and down with joy. I was coming up on him fairly fast so Instead of waving I pulled in the clutch and blipped it twice..... poor kid lost all joy and ran crying to hide behind his mom.. I felt so bad for him. Then again, I've seen grown men run out from their backyards to give me a thumbs up. At this time, I would only recommend the Special Ops pipe if it meant that it would free Kevin up to work on a Drummer for the 1125r... but that would be selfish. | ||

my .02 would be just keep your stock pipe if you are worried about people around you getting upset! The sound of the stock pipe woke my neighbors up to. It doesnt sound loud, but to someone sleeping inside, its just like your neighbor starting his truck with dual exhaust. With a SpecOps, its like starting a drag bike! I did a muffler mod. Gutted a xb12s muffler and fitted a 18" glass pack inside the stock can. Sounds pretty good, looks like a stock muffler. Only a trained eye can detect the work that was done. There is absolutely no back firing or decel popping, with this mod, either. However, I still wear ear plugs, it's too loud to ride for more than 15~20 minutes, without ear plugs. |
