See if you can use an impact wrench, it works for me without a locking tool.

Make sure you are turning it left, it is reverse thread.

Also, if doing it by hand, you might want to wedge a piece of wood in the wheel so it jambs in the swingarm when you spin the nut. I did that once.

I got a price on that tool front a local dealer last week. $190+!!! I bought an impact wrench instead. I'll know this weekend if it works or not.

FWIW: I believe the manual suggests the locking tool for the tightening procedure only.

P.S. Good idea Spatten1, I'll have to try that!

Chainsaw,

I see you live in Denver. Do I know you from the rider group that meets in Morrison?

Anyways, I have a compressor and impact gun and can help you at my house in Golden if you need it. Just pm me.

I've also bought all of the goofy socket sizes needed to dissasemble the XB engines, so no need for you to purchase them if you haven't already

Probably, but I don't know the last time we both showed up on the same day. I don't make as many group rides as I used to, mostly because I'm hung over or sleeping in when Dan Eid wants to ride! : ) I've got a flat-black 9R.

Appreciate the offer on tools. I think I've already bought everything I need. Tools are a great investment...except for a 1-7/8" socket I'll only use once!

I just made a tool to do exactly what you're talking about. You'll need a good piece of hardwood or suitable nylon plate, a drill, and a coping saw. If you remove the tensioner like you probably did, you can wedge your wood block in over the cast aluminum tensioner mounting boss towards the sprocket. Cut the profile of the bottom most teeth for a good fit, and you're good to go.

Of course, I'd prefer to use an impact gun if you have access...less radial load on the bearings than with the conventional breaker bar.

I was refering to the final drive sprocket.
not the primary

just Zip tab has suggested a locking plier.

that will probably be tried first.
