i have xb9 firebolt...i want to change oil but i dont want to screw up and do it wrong...the oil in the swingarm is for what? the motor or the trans? the whole seperate motor oil and trans oil is throwing me off and im a little confused. all i want to know is how do i change the engine oil...and than how do i change the trans oil? if someone could give me some help i would greatly appreciate it!!!thankyou

Ordering a shop manual is really step one, as these bikes are very easy to work on, but due to their unique design, a lot of simple things are not obvious, and it easy to break stuff as nothing is particularly over sized.

I'll walk you through this one, but let's go for the book, ok?

Firstly, take the bike out for a ride, five or ten minutes will do to get the oil hot.

Then remove the chin fairing. Notice the two screws on the front.

Then change the oil filter. If you can't get a genuine Buell filter the following ones will work:
Wal-Mart Super Tech = ST4967
Fram = PH4967
AC = PF1233
Motorcraft = FL836
STP = S4967
k&n/ kn 177
wix/ 51394
bosch/ 3311
purolator/L14476
hd/63806-004
acdelco/pf1233
napa/1394

Remove the oil filter, clean the mounting area, fill the filter with four ounces of oil, and screw back hand tight.

Replace the chin fairing. Be sure to use blue,(medium), Loctite on the threads of these screws: they vibrate with the engine and are easily lost.

Then drain the oil from the swing arm, not the engine, whilst the bike is on the side stand. The drain plug is on the underside of the swing arm.

Replace the drain plug, hopefully with a new O ring, not necessary if the one you have is in good nick. Clean off any metal filings you might find.

Tighten the drain plug just snug. Lots of the youngbloods on the board have stripped the threads by following the factory torque recommendations.

Of course, you don't have to worry about that!


Then fill the reservoir with about two quarts four ounces of your favorite oil. I use Mobil 1 15W50. Others do not.

Take it out for a spin, check the oil level, it should be between the two lines on the dip stick, which is on the black plastic oil fill.

If you cant read the dip stick, just press it against a piece of paper. Measurements are taken with the bike on the side stand, and the dip stick screwed in all the way.

I think that just about gets it. Perhaps one or two brothers will chime in if I have forgotten anything important.

PS: This is the engine oil. There is no separate oil reservoir for the tranny like a Harley. There is also oil in the primary chain case. That has been covered on a recent post here.
