I took the bike out for a bit of a spin today. Temp was around 40º. At the end of a not too fast twenty minute ride the fan did not come on at all, and there was no engine light. I measured the temperature of the rear cylinder with an infrared thermometer I just happened to have in my pocket and the cylinder read about 245º Am i right in assuming that it just was not hot enough to start the fan? The Service Manual states that the fan on temps are 428º with the key on, and 338º with the key off. So I guess I just wasn't riding hard enough. Does that make sense? | ||

I don't know I've been out when it was colder than that and for a shorter time and the fan came on when I stopped and shut the bike off. | ||

Haven't been ridding much this winter, but I seem to remember that the fan came on earlier in the week. It was 50º, ten degrees warmer than today. Any way to check it out without removing the fan? I do have a spare fan in stock. | ||

I'm new to my Buell which is a 2006 xb12ss with about 3500 miles on it. I've had it out a few times in the last couple of weeks with temps ranging from 15F to 50F. Sometimes the fan comes on after a ride and sometimes it doesn't. I don't know if its supposed to be that way or not, but mine sounds like it acts similarly to yours. | ||

It was 70o here Wednesday night, and Ann and I went to bike night. It's about two miles from the house, got there and no fan. We decided to take the long way home ten miles or so, got home, no fan. How many miles you got on her now Jon? | ||

got about 11748 miles on her. Running Mobil One in the motor, oil level between the marks. Thing that has me spooked is that I heard it running last week after running my usual twisties back roads route. Just don't want to get down to MB V and discover I got a problem. (Actually, probably no better place in the whole world to get it diagnosed properly)  | ||

My fan rarely comes on if it is below 70. EcmSpy has a diagnostics tab that will let you test the fan. | ||

EcmSpy has a diagnostics tab that will let you test the fan. How does that work? I see Ecm Spy is a downloadable software for PC or Palm. How do you connect it to the Buell? Any other simple way to check it? | ||

Mobil 1 may be the answer. I ran out of Syn 3 and, following the buell owners handbook, have useda diesel oil in the interim. The fan stays on most of the time after a long ride now. I am thinking that the good quality Synthetic oil may be keeping it cool enough. |
