Just spit the spark plug out of my front cylinder on my '04 XB12S. Is this a common problem?????

that happened to me last summer. The plug took the threads out with it though. Just when I thought I was screwed....... Hammer gave me head.

He gave me good head and in return I gave him bad head.

You can save that head with a TimeSert or HeliCoil spark plug repair kit. I'd prefer to have the TimeSert if possible.

On the front cylinder on an XB you may even be able to do it on the bike.

If you pack the flutes of the cutter and tap with grease or wax, and catch and clean off the chips as they cut the new threads, you can get away with not pulling the head to do the repair.

Best thing is to try to find a shop that has done that kind of work before that will do it for you.

The repair kit works by reaming out the damaged threads then cutting a new larger thread, and putting a steel insert in with new threads.

Have you had the bike serviced by a dealer recently? I'd be inclined to be that the thread was damaged or stripped sometime in the recent past. A properly fitted spark plug and with good threads would not have blown out like that.

I blew the rear one (I didn't install the plug), so I had to drop the motor. Brought in the head to have it timeserted at a local 'performance' motorcycle shop, but they helicoiled about half of the hole and tried to charge me double what they quoted for a timecert. I told them to go fck themselves, paid what I was quoted, and walked out the door (with the head of course). Anyway, I got it all back together and have put about 1500 miles on it sense then and everything is fine. We’ll see if it survives a spark plug change. I used a liberal amount of antiseze on it, so I’m hopeful.

I also helicoiled the hole where the clutch cable enters the primary cover (I bought the bike repoed and in peaces), and it is also holding up well.

So all in all, I’m pleased with helicoil.

The dealer has done all but a few oil changes, and they did the plugs within the last 5k miles, so between them and the factory extended warranty it should be covered.
