(or how not to be a boob) Hello all I've been reading with great interest the threads on ECMSPY (still plowing through the volumes on ukbeg!) and so downloaded it, Megalog, made my cable and pretty psyched. So today I thought "wouldn't it be great to get some goood data to better understand all this" so I stuffed the laptop in its padded pouch and strapped her down to the back seat. Twenty minutes later I pull over to check and see how the logging is going only to be greeted by "OS NOT FOUND". Morale of the story: laptop hard-drives don't want to dance too closely with your Uly. Thankfully it did resurrect ...shall not tempt fate again. BTW did log some data before it puked, kinda interesting to see battery voltage Vs RPM, I wonder if there is a way to diagnose a sick stator....anyone care to share? Hmm, Let me be the first to state you might have stumbled on to something there with the Voltage vs RPM's. I would like to see how the regulator specs out to handle these spikes. Anyone know who makes our Regulators? |

Exactly Nate, unless that scale is "normalized"... i.e. does not go down to zero, that can't be right. If the plot automatically scales to only show where the signal is (which I suspect is the case, as the "min" voltage is labelled as 13.6v, but that green plot goes way down to the bottom axis), then it makes more sense. Ah! Thats it! Max is hidden away above as 15.3, min is 13.6, so the whole scale is just 1.7 volts top to bottom. Thats a lot more reasonable, and there are very few samples actually that high. I don't know how good the analog to digital converter in the ECM is, its probably decent but not super high end. Thats really cool data... I wonder if my 05 ECM is collecting that much info... |

Heh...well...re: the stator, if it's dead and gone, you'll see a steady decline in voltage rather than it correlating to the engine RPM. Dead stator = no charging = you aren't getting very far. Thankfully my sole experience with this resulted in the bike being dead BEFORE I left for the day. It's very easy to determine if your bike isn't charging - and far less time-consuming than poring over ECMSpy data. Now, if you've got some kind of intermittent fault such as a wire broken within the insulation, or something else that's causing your charging to be on-again-off-again, perhaps that could be helpful (although it still wouldn't tell you WHERE the problem was, just help determine that it IS an intermittent failure). You'd see it drop out from a high-voltage charging state to a steady B+ voltage (whatever that happened to be). |

Yep the range is just 1.7 volts. It was mostly a curiosity thing for me. Like what is the voltage tolerance on a perfectly good VR/stator vs what a dying one looks like.... if that is even detectable. So fur instance..eyeballing the chart seems to indicate that the switching period for the VR is rather consistent regardless of voltage, just the excursions get bigger. In my case it looks like the swings are biased above the idle-speed-mean voltage. If one were to assume that this was the 'target' voltage, will a dying VR manifest itself with a gradual creep up in voltage as revs picked up? I remember some threads about headlights blowing and such. It's just some late night brain-farts since I screwed up doing what I intended to do in the first place. After all, the bike is for riding not tinkering eh? Anyone care to share their logfiles for comparison? Laptop in backpack sounds like a great idea, thanks! Ken |

If you really want to run a laptop on your Uly: lake into a Panasonic Toughbook. I would think a Palm Pilot of some sort would be better. They don't have a Hard Drive trying to spin at 5400 or 7200 RPMs, everything is just electronically stored memory chips. Plus you can get a RAM mount and attach them to your handle bars. |

Hey yall The backpack worked, although with the heated gear and laptop and ECMSPY cable, I'm quite the sight! Anyway, now I have to remember to disable the power management! sheesh. I've actually access to a couple of different Toughbooks, I used to lug them around for work but the new Fujitsu's have won me over. I'll be taking a close look into the Palm approach, this laptop thing was a quick hack. Idles is a bit low indeed, I'd set my TP (after TPS reset, the cheesy way) so that the two lower rows are lit. FWIW I checked today and the TPS values after warm up didn't differ from the cold value. Probably neither here nor there. BUT I did do a halfway squared average as per Treadmark and WOW. I'd better post in an appropriate thread ... |

TREAD THATS THE WAY I TAUGHT YOU TO SET THE IDLE. ITS MY WAY BUT YOU CAN USE IT FOR OTHERS SINCE IT WORKS SO WELL. DOESNT IT. YOU WANT MORE SECRETS!!!!!!!! BEING I MADE YOUR ECM PROGRAM I HAVE MANY UP MY SLEAVES. YOU LIKE YOUR NEW DATA IT HAS THE XOPTI AS THE FIRMWEAR AND YOU NOW HAVE THE REAL RACE ECM IT WILL SAY SO IN YOUR CALIBRATION CODE.
