Looking for a track school to try and attend this season. I'd like to try to get up on riding skills, but have no idea where to be looking for me. I live in Albany, NY, so obviously something drivable from there would be best. Places like Pocono or New Hampshire aren't too bad distance-wise. Thoughts? | ||

I ride with Team Promotion, they run Pocono PA, VIR VA, Summit Point WV, Beaver Run PA, Calabogie Canada, and the new NJ Motorsports Park. I prefer Summit Point, even though I am only 45min from Pocono. I am very pleased with the club, coaches, rider training. IMO they know how to run a track day. Their web address is: www(dot)teampromtion(dot)com if you want more information I've found that going to track days improves your overall riding tremendously. Then if you keep pictures of your track riding, you can see how your riding improves. Just keep in mind, riding on the track is different then the street. Have fun! | ||

Take a look at the Inside Pass thing Buell is doing. The nice thing about that, at least if it's done like last year, is you won't spend a fortune trying to see if this sort of thing is for you. You could their leathers and for most of the sessions, their bikes. When you consider a trackday will roast a set of tires, thats a great deal. You said track school and I said track day, but their was coaching available. I used it and it was great. I'm not sure if you're looking for more, but even if you are, I'd do it first. | ||

I definately want to do the Buell Inside Pass, problem is the only one that's reasonable for me to go to is in October - why they schedule it for October in the Northeast is beyond me, so I'd like to do something before that. I was looking at the shcool that runs at Pocono - that may be the way to go. So a track day will waste a set of tires? I'm not sure if I'm prepared for all that - I really want to learn the more advanced riding techniques, but I don't want to be going through tires to do it. I was planning on getting something closer to a sport-touring tire next to do some longer-mileage rides with this year... Lots to think about, thanks for all the help so far! | ||

like hammer said loudon is not to far and i have heard the track is well suited for the buells i am only 30 min from the track and will help if i can i know its 250 for thw one day and 500 for the two day have talked to several and all have been very happy with the school i to am gonna try to go this year | ||

I'll second TPM. I ride with them a bunch and they're good folks and run a very nice track day program. If on the other hand you want a more 'performance street training' kind of thing, look at Reg Pridmores' CLASS http://www.classrides.com(only two stops on the east coast this year) and they are one of the more expensive schools, but well worth the money. | ||

I've done C.L.A.S.S. in the past but I have to say I learned FAR more from Keith Code's California Superbike School, and I can't recommend them highly enough. | ||

C.L.A.S.S. doesn't have anything near me, so they're out. It's basically between the California Superbike School and the Penguin School. California is a bit more expensive, but the course taught seems a little more "well-rounded" than Penguin. Give that, and the fact that CSB will only be at Pocono for one weekend in May while Penguin is at Loudon all season, I'll try CSB first and do Penguin later on if I want some more instruction. I'm torn as to if I want to use my own bike or not... It's tempting to beat up on one of thiers, but learning this stuff on your own machine is very appealing as well. Part of my hesitation is tires - I will probably put something more like a Sport Touring tire on the bike this year, like a Conti Road Attach, and I'm not sure it would handle track duty that well. I want to get a knee down, and be comfortable doing it. | ||

Hi Mark, I did the Kevin Schwantz Suzuki School on Road Atlanta the AMA has wrote about it before it is an excellent school. Total Control with Lee Parks and Tracy Martin spans the gap between the MSF's ERC and a track day and it teaches you the body positions and suspension set ups and other good stuff. I did the Suzuki school then Total Control, and last year was Inside Pass at VIR. All of them were FUN and I plan on going to the NJ motorsports park for the Inside Pass event this year. K | ||

Penguin school is a race school. It is designed to get you a compition(race) licence. Track safty, reading race flags, entering/exiting a live track. They teach you how to race not ride. If you ask you will get pointers on breaking, counter steering, bike setup, ect, ect. I did the school twice, Great fun getting a race licence. Tires, if ya got a new set o good sport proformanse street tires they will last a day of track fun and still have some street miles(depends on how hard ya push um) left in um. | ||

Well, despite the cost, the CSB is looking like my first choice. If I decide i want something more race-oriented, I'll do the Penguin School. I'll be buying Lee Park's book regardless of anything, but since his class comes to basically my back yard, I may give that a shot as well. | ||

Penguin will get you certified if you want to race later. You can go in with very little skill and learn quite a bit. There were guys there that didn't ever get close to dragging a knee or pushing the tires. I also did Team Hammer Suzuki Advanced school at Daytona but that is only after you have a license and race experience. I also recommend new good tires. A buddy of mine wadded a 500 mile old GSXR because he tried to go race pace on stock street tires. Lack of tire money cost him big time. Have fun. |
