Yes I'm going there. I'm going into the oil filter zone. I have combed the XBoard and the archives and no come up with anything on what oil filters most are using. I did a little digging and could only find a Wix or K&N. K&N HP-1003, Wix 51394. Are these familiar to anyone and/or is there anything else out there? I am staying away from Fram. I have had 2 ruptured seams on their high end products and just don't trust them any more.

I went to the local Wally-World and bought the Super Tech ST4967, peeled the "super Tech sticker off, and now I have a Buell filter.

They're the same filter, except the Super Tech only costs $1.97

I'd steer clear of Fram filters too. Read too much bad stuff about them.

Other than the stock Buell filter, the Super Tech is the only other one I've used on my Buell.

Read more about the Super Tech and other filters here:

Agree. I used to buy Fram filters and while I have not had one fail on me, I read a review on filters 2-3 years ago and from then I have not bought another Fram & don't ever intend to do so again. Seems like a typical example of some greedheads taking a trusted name & using it to make some short-term profits.

Ther is a reason the HD filters are more expensive than most, they are bult to order for HD meaning the production quanties are much lower than automotive. Even though they look identical to the others, the actual filter meda is finer and they filter down to the 4-5 micron range (most others are twice that). So bottom line for me, I buy the HD filters, but use the Mobil 1 v-twin oil.

;)

Just having a little fun with ya :) I bet the harley filters roll off the same production line as several other brands, and the only difference is packaging and paint scheme.

If you have any solid evidence that the filter media on a stock sportster harley filter is any better then a good brand aftermarket, we would love to see it.

For an approximately equal price, I would bet the Mobil 1 Filter kills it in every measurable catagory (except color scheme).

I think the stock Harley filters are good filters, but so are the Bosch and many others.

Just a fyi... I cross referenced some oil filter numbers starting from the Harley or Buell#63806-00Y and the Fram PH 4967, the numbers I came up with are: STP S4967, Bosch 3311, Mobil 1 M1-103, and K&N HP 1003... I guess it's allright to use the auto filters??? Any comments??? I use the Mobil 1 filters (and oil) in my car and truck and they're about 10 or 12 bucks but it's cheap insurance to me... Auto Zone used to have a deal if you bought two filters they took off $2 off each one but last time I was in a few months ago they didn't...

I have to agree with Reepicheep. I have yet to see anything published by Buell or Harley-Davidson regarding the filtering efficiency of their oil filters.

You would not be incorrect in saying that your chain link fence filters out particles in the 4-5 micron size range. However, the filtering efficiency would be terrible!

I personally think that Mobil 1 (M1-103) and the AC Delco Ultraguard Gold are the best two filters made. Why? These two companies are not afraid to publish the results of testing their filters against national testing specifications.

These are my opinions only; in the end, do what works for you.

Well, that would depend on the color of your bike...if you've got a blue '97 M2 like me, the Mobil 1 filter - is/is almost - a perfect color match.

The wally world filter and all the others are cheaper but....I ask this not trying to be a salesman or anything.
we buellers do our research and were all pretty proud of that. But maybe one of the reason some of your dealers in your areas suck because of this one thing.
After you purchase you rarely spend your money back there on normal maintance stuff. Therefore they see no profit from buells and therefore do not cater to you.
Its simple business and I am not trying to stir up shit. Its just an observation. I spend my money at my work. Yes I get a discount but the filters at you are speaking of are still cheaper than my discount. But I put my money where my mouth is.
Yes I use motul oil but I order thru work and pay here. like I said I am not trying to stir it up. It is just and observation on my part.
I can't say that I blame you at all. But there is a cause and effect for everything and that is that.
Now like I said this is just me thinking and thats all. Not pointing any fingers or anything.

What came first, the chicken or the egg?
Why are some dealers more Buellish than others, is it because Buell riders shop elsewhere for parts, or do some Buell riders have to shop elsewhere just to get reasonable customer satisfaction.
It may be a cause and effect situation, but the analysis needs much more data than was presented above.
YMMV.
;)

all I was saying was this....some dealers may not be buellish because of this. Some of us are buellish because we love and ride the bikes. It really is that simple. some are not.
If I was in the business of doing this study it would be more in depth . but alas this is not what I do for a living. What I do is give good service and bend over backward for buell customers. Only because I am one of you period.

Brian,
And it is appreciated. I often have purchased parts locally, even when I have to tell the dealership or shop or store where to get the parts. I figure if I help them carry what I want then the next time they may have it in stock.

I believe most or many customers can appreciate the fact that a business has to be run as a business or it won't be in business for very long. I think most customers just want to be shown at least a little bit of courtesy, or at least not be shown any annimosity. And I also believe most customers would like their dealership to at least carry a basic level of parts and supplies.

We try, we learn, we go forth, we do what we can, we do what we have to. If a dealership sees it's customers shopping elsewhere then they can either try to recapture that customer, or not. If a customer doesn't like something at a dealership they can say something, or not. The sad thing is the "or not" is generally easier than the alternative, but it is also usually a dead end street for both the customer and dealer regarding their mutual relationship.

Appreciation and understanding of the product and the customer do seem to be the key.

You're going to be here for a day or three in a few weeks aren't you? If you think of it, and if you have any, I'd like to get a key fob or something from your shop. Let me know how much if you can fit it in your gear, or what you'd like in swap for it. I'm planning on taking the 20th off work for the ride and visit, and then the 22nd for the B-Trax and stuff.

MikeJ.

I agree Brian. If I lived a reasonable distance from you, or from Modesto Buell, or Waterloo, I would buy my oil filters there... Well, I would if you had bigger filters, as I like the extra capacity of the Fl1A on my M2, but you get the idea.

Are you allowed to buy up a case of the Bosch filters, mark them "use at your own risk", and sell those?

If I get service and respect, I happily pay a little extra. Of the three Buell "Dealers" I have delt with, one of the three gives me that (unfortunately that one is 50 miles away).
