Yesterday I installed my Race Header and Race Muffler on my M2. This exhaust combination must really increase flow over the stock header with a V&H because now the 162.5 main jet seems way too lean. Also, there is some popping in the exhaust on deceleration but that might be related to exhaust leaks. I havn't checked that yet. Is anyone running a Race Header and Race Muffler with a Mikuni HSR 42 and a ForceWinder intake? If so, what jet size works for you and what is your approximate altitude? I plan to go up one jet size or two to 165 or 167.5 and raise the needle another notch next week to see if that does the trick. Meanwhile, if anyone has any experience with this intake/carbexhaust setup to share it would be most appreciated. Regards, Dave |

Dave, I am at sea level but occasionally go up to 5000 ft with no problems. I have the same set up as you except for I have the D& D system. Not sure what jets I have in my Mikuni, notations from the previous owner in the service manual show 205 for main and 48 for slow? That doesn't jive with what is on the Mikuni site though. I had backfires on deceleration before because of poor mating of the pipes at the head. Everything is perfect now. Maybe we can get FMJ to put his 2 cents in, he's got quite a bit of experience tuning carburated tubers... I'm curious also as I've just moved from 5000' down to 900' and my bike is running real lean now. the bike has a 157.5 main, and a 22.5 slow, which is what was the set-up for 5000'. I've got a 180 main now, and a 45 slow, and it seems much better, but not perfect. How 'bout it FMJ? Any thoughts??? |

Dave Running a HSR42, and two brothers can on 2.5" headers, 165 in the main is the best for me. Might not be enough for the race exhaust. That's on a 1250 with zippers head mods. Joe (Message edited by bad_karma on February 18, 2008) |

Dave, I'm near Cleveland, Ohio, have a KT exhaust (no baffles, straight thru open pipe), hsr42, race ignition, forcewinder style air cleaner and am running a 30 pilot and a 165 main, with the idle mixture screw two turns out and the bike runs great. Use a piece of toilet paper (unused) and glide it around the header, muffler, and header muffler connection to see if there are any air leaks. If the paper blows then you have an exhaust leak and that is most likely why there's popping on decel. If you don't have any exhaust leaks your main culprit is your mixture at idle-1/8 throttle, which means you need to go up on the pilot or fine tune the idle mixture screw. Good luck. |

IIRC I have a 167.5 but am a 1250 with cams and stage 3 heads. Try the 165. I had to go several steps up on pilot and raise needle as well. |

Art I run from sea level to around 3600 feet. Not sure about the slow will have to check, it's what came in it from the factory. Joe |

Well, I went up to the 165 main, raised the needle two steps and adjusted the idle. Great result! No popping, strong, smooth power and no misbehavior of any kind. I am one very happy Buell rider today! Thank you very much. Regards, Dave |

Combined with the race header,muffler and the Forcewinder it ran great! Ralph, That is one clean dino run. Nice and smooth all the way up. He probably could have taken it to 6200 easily but he got you the info you need. Did they hook up a CO2 meter? Sometimes you can pull out a spot in the power band where it leans out or is too fat by looking at emissions info...never mind, the thing runs great! L8r, Carl |
