I'm planning to get the first red XB12R that comes to our dealer so I wanted to get the ball rolling on insurance.

Has anybody tried to insure one yet? I called a local insurance service (www.nccycleinsurance.com) for a quote, they sounded a little confused when I told them the bike wasn't even available yet. Progressive doesn't offer full coverage on motorcycles in NC. I've heard State Farm has good prices but they require you to insure a car with them to have a motorcycle policy. I'm planning to give HD's insurance a shot but I've heard they recently raised prices.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks,
Mike L.

I went to HD's insurance on then web and it is exactly the same as Progressive. They even use the same web interface with Harley Logo's. I ran estimates there and they came out exactly the same as Progressive.

I hope Harley/Buell goes back to classifying both the XB9's & 12's engine as from the Sportster production line (ie: XL=Sportster or Buell).Only, call the Sporty cases, etc. XB's now. My insurance was alot cheaper with my 1250, stage 3, '00 X1 than it is for the stockish XB9S I have now! The insurance co. (undisclosed) treated just like it's Harley brethern, the Sportster. Go figure? That all changed with the XB, though. Now it's like any other sportbike to them. I just hope that there are some ambitious insurance co.'s that will want to earn our business, that's all I can say.

Well, I got one quote for $1130/year for full coverage. I'm 22, no MSF, one moving violation, and one not-at-fault accident. My brother-in-law was quoted $1800/yr on his 999, so $1130 doesn't seem bad. Anyone else get any quotes?

Spike,

Depends on what YOU call full coverage. Just as an example, I gave Progressive a shot (on-line) tonight and I live in Arizona. For the coverage listed below, the 2004 Buell is $1,850 for me. No tickets, never had an accident and 54 years old.

If I include my Fatboy and my 98 Buell, you'll have to add an additional $2,892.00 to the above price.

Bodily Injury, Property Damage & Guest Passenger coverage:

$100,000 person/$300,000 accident/$50,000 property damage $161 $100,000 person/$300,000 accident/$50,000 property damage

Uninsured Motorists Bodily Injury (UMBI) coverage:
$100,000 person/$300,000 accident $139 $100,000 person/$300,000 accident

Underinsured Motorists Bodily Injury (UIM) coverage:
$100,000 person/$300,000 accident $111 $100,000 person/$300,000 accident

Medical Payments coverage:
$10,000 each person

Comprehensive coverage:
$250 Deductible Deductible

Collision coverage:
$250 Deductible

something to be said for having a 984cc...

less than $400 A YEAR! State Farm, Full coverage, garaged in crappy neighborhood by 33 year old driver with no recent convictions! I also have my Harley, truck, and renters insurance with them.

Ironic? It costs me less to fully insure 2 newish motorcycles than carry liability only on a 31 year old truck for one year!

Insurance varies state to state and sometimes it seems (but really isn't) almost random how rate quotes are produced. I just got my renewal notice from Progressive. Here's what they did for the yearly rates: I'm over 50, married, clean record, good thoughts (usually), club membership, yada yada, ....

'89 HD FLHS
currently: $225, renewal $200 :] I'll keep it.

'03 XB9S
currently: $460, renewal $770 I won't renew at this rate.

After many phone calls, HOG insurance came through with $450 from Dairyland. But they only do Dairyland or Progressive for my state (WA). Your state probably has different rules.

Most companies are rating the XB9's as either "High Performance" or "Street Sport" which I believe are the highest ranks.

Keep shopping around...

I insure two bikes through H-D / Guide One.. and I'm paying like $750 for both (1 H-D, 1 XB9) like it's been said, it's got a lot to do with the state and the companies available there..

Later,

I had insurance through Motorcycle Services on-line, which is through Kemper. Full coverage on my 2001 X1 was only $360 a year, 27 y/o married male, clean record. And when some jerk ran a red light and hit me, they gave me $7800 for the bike and $1400 for accessories.

Progressive has always given me the best quotes when matching dollar for dollar / coverage for coverage.
