quote: 02-22-2008 - 18:46 THE APRILIA RSV 4 “RACE MACHINE” IS UNVEILED FOR THE FIRST TIME The Aprilia Superbike, the bike which from 2009 will bring the Noale based company back to four-stroke racing, has been unveiled for the first time during the Piaggio Group Convention in Milan. After the success in the 2007 World Championships with Aprilia riders and bikes dominating the 125 and 250 classes (winning all four titles, a repeat of the 2006 performance), the Veneto company gave a preview of the eagerly awaited RSV 4 “Race Machine”. An extraordinary preview to a privileged audience of more than 1,200 dealers attending the International Piaggio Group Convention. Four cylinders, 1000 cc, power of well over 200 HP in the race version, the new bike due to make its road debut by the end of 2008 will mark Aprilia's return to the World Superbike Championship in the 2009 season. The Aprilia RSV 4 is driven by the most revolutionary and powerful engine ever built by Aprilia. A four-cylinder one litre 65° V engine - a layout making it unique among all the world's production engines - in which the most sophisticated engine engineering is combined with top quality materials and the most advanced electronic control technology. The Aprilia engine in fact uses integral ride-by-wire technology, opening up new frontiers in managing such a powerful engine, with almost infinite possibilities for controlling power output and traction.

Sweet look, but why not put it on stands in stead of bolting it to the floor... Nothing says "I'm not ready to be ridden" like a good set of bolts holding you up. |

What troubles me about this is this should have been the next Honda VFR... It was shameful for Honda to let a great name plate like that wither on the vine. |

The obstacles to fly by wire have not been "can we do it", they have been "can we do it right". It's clearly the future of vehicles, but its going to take the first 200% of your time to get it 90% working, and the next 800% of your time to get the last 10% working. It opens up all sorts of new possibilities though. I just got a 2001 Saab 9-3 that has canbus and all sorts of management. It shifts the auto transmission differently until the control module detects that it has warmed up sufficiently... all this to prevent excessive wear and tear from a corner case. Remember the old joke? A guy goes to a doctor and say "doc! When I move my elbow like this, it hurts!". The doc says "then don't move your elbow like that!". With really sophisticated vehicle control systems, that type of approach to many problems may becomre practical and valuable. Those Honda V4's have been around forever, its really a shame Honda let them stagnate. |
