So I tried removing the upper belt cover tonight...only to get confuzzled at how to remove the front-most bolt - the one right behind the brake lines. I've removed the heel guard, and found the right hex head to go in the bolt, but I can't get the right angle on the long hex drive I have to turn the bolt... Other suggestions? |

SV1000S- i dont know about that bike but on my xb i uses a short bit and a 1/4 inch wrench to remove the top belt cover. you are talking about the belt cover that attaches to the swingarm right? |

I think he's referring to the XB he just bought. If so, you can use a ball end allen key if you have one. If not, just remove the 'rearset' panel. It's only a few bolts and then you can swing everything out of the way for access. |

Don't remove the heel guard - remove the entire peg mount ass'y. It's 3 allen-head bolts and you can just move it over or ziptie it up out of the way until you're done. |

You will have to pull the wheel off to get the gaurds off. IIRC That is the 03 belt system and it is a PITA to pull the wheel with the gaurds in place. I can stop by and show ya how if needed. PM me your number and when you will be around and I will see if I sneak out! |

Yes, I'm talking about my 03 XB9S, sorry... I don't have, nor do I know what is, a ball end allen key... But I'll try taking off the whole rearset - I'm sure that will work, I just never tried it. I hope I don't have to take the wheel off Charles! If I do, I'm def waiting till you can come over, I'm too ascared I posted my number up for ya on BSB - I'll be around here for another hour or two, then both nights this weekend. |

Welp, New12r is right - the 03 is retarded. I've gotta pull the wheel to do it right, if I want to salvage the guard... So New, you have a swingarm stand and axle wrench?! |

Here's the difference between ball-end and standard allen wrenches or "keys" It lets you approach the bolt from an angle. (Message edited by pwnzor on February 23, 2008) |

So you'd put the ball end into the bolt head? |

FYI - on an 03, you do not have to remove the rear wheel, providing you don't mind not having the belt cover backing piece in multiple pieces. I wanted to keep the lower belt cover on, so this wasn't a problem for me. You just have to remove the swingarm brace! The upper belt cover will come off with that (providing you've removed the screws holding the upper belt cover to the cover backing plate). Then cut the backing plate as you see fit, remove the cover from the brace, and reinstall the brace, torquing the bolts to 50 ft lbs. Voila... |
