I am happy to have found this site as well as the people who have welcomed me.

anyways...

I have a couple of questions.

1. is the race muffler really that loud? I was going down telegraph yesterday when a guy on the same bike as me (xb9r) with a stock muffler zipped right up to me. I could hardly hear him. I just didnt realize the stock muffler was that much quieter.

2. is there something that i can use to clean my headers? I dont know what they are made out of and everyone in my family owns harleys and tells me to get the chrome polish as all i am doing is riding a sports bike with a harley engine.

Mookie,
Check this out.

Cost a little over $100
The pipes never needed polishing again.

Uh, let's see if I can help a little..

on point 1. Yes, it is a good deal louder, if you also factor in wind blast (around your helmet) while moving at a decent clip, you won't hear much of anything. The factory pipe (some one correct me if I'm wrong) is designed to meet ALL sound restrictions wherever the bike is sold. That means it's definitely as quite as they can make it. You'll note that Buell states the Pro-Series Race Kit muffler, ecm and filter are not intended for street use.

On point 2. I suppose any pipe/metal cleaner or polish would work... however, I kind of like the coloring, I mean, the pipes weren't chrome to start with, so why try and make them look like they were? I just clean them as I do the rest of my bike, then RIDE!

Oh and as for the 'just a Harley' quote.. depending on what sort of friends they are, you can smile politely and invite them to join you in a spirited jaunt to the back roads.. Or, with a holligans grin, dare them to keep up! If you must, you can also simply refute the statement and make logical points about the design being Buells' not Harley-Davidsons'.. and ask them how many 984cc H-D's they know of.. then invite them to go riding... heheheheheh... Nope, not a Harley..

Later,

im not looking to make them chrome. I was just looking to try to keep an even color with them. I do like the chrome though.

as for the harley statements. Im not really worried about them. I keep asking them how i can get the damn harley sticker off my helmet though.

Mookie,

Your headers are brushed stainless steel. Use a scotchbrite pad on them.

"I keep asking them how i can get the damn harley sticker off my helmet though. "

Best way is to not buy a helmet with the sticker on it in the first place.
You can try a heat gun, or hair dryer. Just don't get the helmet so hot that it breaksdown the liner/impact-material to shell bonding.
A belt sander might also work.
Probably best to just leave the helmet sitting in the sun and then try to peel it off. Cover up any sticky residue with a new sticker.
Or best yet, just stick a new sticker over the Harley one.

Mookie,

I've had the race can for a while, that, coupled with the airbox mod I did have made my bike as loud as my friends' tubers. In fact, I've had two of them comment on it (one with a Pro-Series can on his M2, the other with a D&D on his X1). I never ride without ear plugs anymore.

As stated, the scotchbrite will clean the headers. I wouldn't bother. They'll be blue again in a day or two unless you really baby that bike. Personally I love the way they look all blued.

For the helmet, well, that's what you get for buying something that says Harley on it. ;-P Get a bigger sticker and cover it.

Bryan:
How did (did you?) solve the engine returning to idle? I think I remember you saying something about it (him ) being slow to return to idle after your air box mod.

It just worked itself out. It basically done that to me every time I've had any significant intake/exhaust change or a TPS reset. It seems to need 10-15 miles to unkink itself.

However, I think that I need a new O2 sensor and a TPS reset. The bike's doing weird things to me under hard accelleration and it just seems 'weaker' than before, like it's no longer mixing things properly.

Glad it worked itself out, I've heard it can take up 50 miles to learn a new configuration.
I hope it's not long for you to get things mixing right.

I'll amend my statement. It took 10-15 miles of constant throttle riding to work itself out, not just 10-15 miles. So it probably was closer to 40-50 miles buy the time all was said and done.

Anyone know a crossover P/N for a aftermarket O2 sensor that will fit a XB?
