I have an 05 XB12R
I rebuilt my entire clutch stack with Buell factory parts.
Including:
judder/dampener spring and seat
narrow friction plate
7 steel plates
7 friction plates
retaining ring and seat.
and the clutch spring

So everything is new. The clutch pack fits nice and tight as it should be. Clutch adjusted properly (lightly seated) btw, I have the American Sport Bike Magura Hydraulic Clutch.

The problem is this:
turn the bike on in neutral, grab the clutch lever in, shift into first. As you slowly release the clutch lever, about 3/4", (I'm not holding the front brake lever while doing this) the clutch grabs and the bike jerks forward an inch or two. I continue slowly releasing the lever and nothing, no more grab.

So in first clutch fully engaged, lever relaxed, hands of the bike, on the stand, there is no movement at all. Giving it some throttle does nothing.

Again, I double checked, the plates, springs, and everything in the clutch stack is 100% new looking.

Any ideas what's going on? My thought is the Motul primary oil I use might not be good with the stock setup. So I'm gonna try some harley branded primary oil tomorrow unless someone has some insight as to what's going on.

Don't you have to soak the fiber plates?
I always do. Somebody with more expertise will be along.

Are you saying the clutch first grabs then disengages by itself when you release the clutch lever in first gear and you get no drive? If so, you have a couple things to consider.

1) Didn't you post here a little while ago saying you had to remove a steel and a fiber plate in order to fit the locking snap ring? You'd then have 6 steel and 6 fiber plates installed, yes/no? If yes, that is most likely your problem; there should be 7 each. If no, see 2).

2) Perhaps the hydraulic clutch is not releasing properly? Before you started the engine after rebuilding the clutch, did you try to push the bike in first gear with the clutch lever pulled all the way in to see if the bike moved freely? That would be the first test. The second test is to release the lever and see if you can't push the bike any more.

Bad_Karma- I soaked the plates for about 15 min. I think the manual says 5 min so I soaked all the plates just to be safe.

#1) I did post, but I'll have to count the plates again when I get home. I'm now thinking removing those 2 plates made me short 1 set. ARG!!!

#2) Bike moves freely back and forth with lever pulled in or let out all the way with your hand off the lever

When releasing the lever, the grab is maybe 3/4", the bike jerks forward, release the lever a bit more and no more grab at all.
