I've been reading some of the other threads and haven't really found any answers. I haven't had the bike out for about 3 months. The battery is on a Tender and I run the bike about once a month for 5 minutes or so. About 2 weeks ago I started it up and it ran perfect. I let it run for about 2 minutes. Yesterday I tried to start it and I pushed the starter button without giving any gas and it cranks for about 5 seconds and started and ran for about 5 seconds. Then I cranked it again and it wouldn't start. I cranked it and gave it gas and it backfired. Everything seems to be working OK. When I switch it on I hear the fuel pump like I always have. I didn't try it again because it's been pretty cold out. Any suggestions about what it could be? |

David start with a fresh set of plugs. Run the motor longer to allow it to heat up fully. From there you will need to determine if it is fuel or ignition. Joe |

I actually run it till the fan comes on. I guess it's more than 5 minutes. It was running fine the last time I ran it then seemed to start fine this time but only ran for 5 seconds... then it wouldn't start. I'm going to try again tomorrow. I am planning on taking it to the shop to get everything done before next season. It has 2800 miles on it and I'm not sure of the maintenance schedule of the last owner. I bought it at the end of last season and have only put less than 100 miles on it. I've only ridden it to and from work and I work about 6 miles away. I would prefer it to be running when I bring it to the shop. |

David That 6 mile run is a killer on motors. Try and find a longer twister way home. Good luck let us know what the fix is. Joe |

Thanks for the replies... I plan on doing more riding when it gets warm. As soon as I got the bike the weather got bad... Of course I expected that. When I find out anything I'll post it. |

Followup... I looked at the bike the other day and decided to try and start it again. It started fine and ran fine. The other day was a great day to ride but I hurt my back at work and I couldn't ride. Looks like it's always something. |

David....the reason your having problems is your starting the bike and unless you really get it to full operating temp...its running rich ...for colder motor operation. your fouling the plugs. replace em and in winter just use stabilizer and leave it alone if you cant ride...just leave it on the tender and you should be fine |

I was just coming back to ask a question and it seems you answered before I got to ask my question... I tried to start it again yesterday. It cranked for about 5 seconds then backfired VERY loud. My eyes were burning too. At that point I assumed that it was just too cold for it to run right and put her away. I'm going to take your advise and stop trying to start it until it warms up. I also want to take it to a Buell Dealer before next season for a "check up". (Liberty Buell in Rahway NJ) |
