As soon as possible, I'll check multiple methods and report back here. Hopefully, this weekend.. Weather permitting. |

Blu - yours should be pretty darn close. Joe and I (yes, the "other" Joe was your tech) fiddled with it for a little over an hour figuring out how to make it work correctly. Actually, Joe fiddled a lot while I was on the phone. Ask Court, LOL. Please keep me - us - posted. Looks like we may have some passable weather here today at least. |

Why hasn't BMC notified dealers of this new oil check procedure. As a tech, I was unaware of this change until I logged on to the Badweb last night. These are the kind of things that make dealers look stupid in the eyes of the customer when they come in for a service. |

This is "the bleeding edge" right here. Stay tuned for further developments. This whole process is making me very proud of BMC, thanks again to all involved. Zack |

>>>Why hasn't BMC notified dealers of this new oil check procedure. I suspect the dealers will know quickly. Bear in mind this thread started on Friday December 28th and the sun has just risen on Saturday December 29th. One of the purposes of this "PRINT THIS OUT AND TAKE TO TO YOUR DEALER" is not to make the dealer look stupid but to quickly move information . . . it's the age we live in. Bear in mind, there was a day I used to get such information in the U.S. Mail from the Buell factory on Road X. The moral of the story is that you, as a tech, can and do have the info now. Anyone accuses you of looking "stupid" because you got it on badweb . . . well, have them call me. Court |

Court, taking to some Dealers means nothing as "i" have explained it is wrong and HOW TOO and was told THEY had to do it the way the book says !!! AND this mentality is still abounding ... (Message edited by buellistic on December 29, 2007) |

Same problems here. I have asked for recalls to performed weeks before the dealer ever knew anything.. They give you what the F are you talking about look. Not mean, but very little weight is given to the walk in self diagnostics. |

It has been cold, wet and generally miserable since my 1125R was delivered. I notice she is smoking a little at cold idle. She only has 290 miles on her - and based on weather forecasts, I won't be riding her until next week. Is this a symptom of being overfull of oil? The smoking goes away once she gets close to operating temps - just a little during warm up. |

Tim - your "cloud" sounds like what I see with mine. It's cold here and the 1125 makes a bigger exhaust cloud than I'm used to seeing from a bike. Looks just like a car when it's warming up. No smoke from mine tho. An anony said if you overfill it will puke into the breather, check your airbox. Z |

Check to see if it's smoke or vapor. Moisture & condensation collects inside mufflers when it's cold & humid. My XB will have very visible exhaust upon start up too for the first 2-5 minutes while all that moisture is being evaporated. |

I have the smoking at start up as well. It's only when the bike is first started up. The color is white, which indicates that it's water and not oil. |

Ok.. I'm back.. Not sure how much help I'll be, but here goes. Took the bike out and tooled around for about 15 minutes, when I pulled back into my garage, coolant temp read about 170* so I knew it was warm enough to be considered 'hot'. I held the bike upright (seated) and let it idle for about three minutes, then shut it down. Somewhere on the road I had lost my rag (dang it) so I had to put it on the side stand and grab another, Then I sat on the bike and reached down to see how easy it would be to check while seated on the bike; That sucker is tucked in nice and tight and pulling it while seated took a moment or three and I could feel the heat from the exhaust on my fingers as I fiddled with the warm dipstick to get it to clear the frame and engine cases without rubbing it on anything. Wiped it down (oil was three quarters of the way up the stick - and it's pretty long with only the very bottom marked for checking the level) re-inserted, screwed it in, then removed it again. It appears oil was up over the 'over full' mark by a good couple of inches. I wiped it again and re-inserted the stick, leaned it back onto the side stand and after dismounting removed it again. It still showed 'over full' but not as much. I wiped it a third time, reinserted it all the way in and stood the bike up, this is a little trickier holding the bike upright and removing the stick without smacking it on everything that's packed in there (exhaust, heat shield, brake lever etc.) Once it was out I still seem to have read it as 'over full'. I looked down into the fill tube and could see oil only a few inches below the opening. This makes me feel it's absolutely impossible for me to get an accurate reading at this time. Well Damn! For those of you wondering about a longer dip stick. Not sure if that will work, since the stock stick is almost a foot long and seems to reach all the way to the bottom of the 'tube' in the side of the bike. So a longer one would have to be flexible and travel somewhere into the oil sump I suppose. Now, on to the next part of my story. I called my dealer to find out if I could run up there and get it corrected. My fourth call finally ended up talking to 'someone' claiming to be service. Not sure who it was but the conversation went like this.. "Hi, this is Peter Migala, I've got one of the new 1125's. I'm not sure if you've heard that there is a mistake in the owners manual, but I just checked my oil and it's overfull, I was.." cut off by: "You're not supposed to over fill it." "I didn't over fill it, I got it from you guys like that," "Well you need to drain it and then refill the proper amount." "I'm not set up to do that right now, I want to bring it in and have you guys take a look at it, I'm not sure if it's been puking into the air filter or not." "Nope, it won't puke into the filter, just don't ride it, you'll be fine. Just drain it and refill." By now I'm getting a little exasperated.. "What time are you open Sunday?" "Eleven." "Ok, I don't know if you know this yet, but I just read that the book has a misprint, there may be a bulletin on it you may not have seen on how to check the oil level. I'm thinking that during PDI you checked it and added some thinking it was low, now," "We don't add any thing at PDI. We didn't touch it." "In the morning, will someone be there that can help me? I'll bring it in tomorrow morning to get this looked at." "Yeah, someone'll be here, but you shouldn't be adding fluids without checking first." "I didn't add any fluid, I just checked it.. Look, how late will you be open? I'll head over as early as I can." "We're closed at 5. Uh, don't be showin' up at 4 'cause that's too late, may not be any of us here then." "I'll be there as early as I can. I'm not coming in late, it's supposed to get colder and rainy" "Ok, you should just drain it and refill yourself." "I'll be there in the morning." "Ok." Click. I'm hoping the second string will be there Sunday. I know the First String service won't be there, but the jerk on the phone sounded like the bench warmer or maybe the water boy? I'll let you all know how this goes, since it's gotta be a 'warranty' type item.. If nothing else, it's a 'get it right' chance for them and for me. Hope some of this information helps someone. I'll report back later once again.. once I've got the correct oil level and the air filter checked to see if I've gotten any puke up. Shouldn't be a problem (according to annony) but this is my Christmas present and it should just be .. well.. as right as possible.} |

I checked my oil level today also. It was way overfull......similar to yours Blublak. I have a hand pump for model airplanes (nitro fuel) that I used to pump out about one quart. It's now right at the overfull line when using the correct procedure. I feared a similar conversation with the Dealer, so I just took care of it myself. |

I honestly don't know if it was overfilled during break in. I was not up to snuff on the oil check procedure then. I changed oil at the prescribed break in, and after that it read right at 3/4 between low and max after I put 3 quarts in. I get the same reading whether I check it sitting on the bike and keeping it upright during the check procedure as compared to checking it using the method of cleaning the dipstick and reinserting and then setting the bike upright and then back on sidestand and checking the dipstick. On a side note.. damn! what an awesome bike!! My wife even noticed that I have never been this excited about a Buell! Cheers... Asbjorn (Message edited by doerman on December 30, 2007) |

Could someone explain to me why the oil check procedure is so complicated?? Yes. The fact of the matter is that it is not very complicated. We are a community of infatuated gear heads who have been eagerly waiting for this motorcycle for (Insert 3 months to 16 years here to reflect your own circumstances) and, even before it hit the street have been microsecting each and every component. In ACTUAL practice . . . owners will be pretty much simply riding and enjoying the motorcycle. Meanwhile . . . we'll remain here on duty. (Message edited by court on December 30, 2007) |

It's not that big of a procedure to check the oil. It's different from the norm, but that's what makes it a Buell. |

My take: As always, it looks more complicated in print than it actually is in practice. I see this quite often when installing and setting up new equipment and writing up procedures for maintaining that equipment. $0.02... |

Ok.. After a couple of odd moments at the dealer, the tech took it in and checked it.. upright it was overfull. On the sidestand it was pretty much good to go. After the techs/service folks checked everything they had on it, they agreed to drain some oil from it. After three checks it gave two that showed proper levels. He took a few moments and checked a couple of other things and I was good to go. I'll check it again as a matter of course soon, but for now, it looks good to go. |

Blu - glad they got you taken care of. Jason called me during/right after your visit to make sure everything was OK, he said he had gotten my email on Friday and had checked out this thread. Asked me if I thought it was "valid information" and I allowed as how I was pretty sure it was. "upright it was overfull. On the sidestand it was pretty much good to go" Told ya, didn't I? Hope you got home before the weather. We hit snow on a couple of the higher passes from Cumberland, and even though the trip from Hagerstown to Frederick was just rain, people were super-stupid. Glad that a) I was in the truck and b) I'm home now with a beverage and a heating pad. Gotta learn that one "lift/twist" move I keep pulling with building materials *hurts*... |

Yo Rat.. What can I say.. Even if some folks may have been thinking that I'm a pain in the ass.. at least I try to be friendly about it.. besides, I rode up and back and it was quite chilly.. A couple of miles before Leesburg it started to spit and I kept trying to mentally convince folks on 15 to speed up.. Telepathy didn't work, so they didn't.. Rain started in ernest about a mile from the house. Got home a little wet and pretty chilled, but a little (ok, several hours) of warm up time in front of the idiot box took care of that.. Bike of course, handled it all in stride.. (Message edited by BluBlak on December 31, 2007) |

I don't know if anyone else has pointed this out, but the Buell Web Site calls for FOUR (4) quarts of oil capacity for the 1125R. Maybe that should be changed? |

quote:The correct total oil capacity is 3 quarts (2.8 L). Please do not put more than 3 quarts (2.8L) of oil into your Buell 1125R motorcycle.
It's been discussed and the information should be changed this week. |
