I am in the market for a lift for my third car garage. I am wanting a lift to store my 70 firebird. I have already decided on a four post platform version. My question is do any of you have recommendations on brand and type? | ||

I'd get one that's a self locking. Also, get the heaviest one you can afford. | ||

I got a used Rotary 4 post lift a couple of years ago. I think they are the best. | ||

My buddy has this unit. I'm not sure of the name but its been running for at least 7 years now every day without problems. I'll ask him name brand tomorrow and price and post back.  | ||

Just a personal note about versatility and SAFETY. The 2 post lifts are more versatile and as long as you use the correct jacking points are very safe. All modern auto lift systems have a mechanical locking system and ALWAYS USE THEM. If you still chose to go with a four post platform style lift make sure you get a true jacking system, not some rolling tray they tell you to use a bottle jack on. the jacking beam(system) should be integral to the sliding tray with adjustable arms or multiple jacks and locks firmly to the rack when lift the car. This is just my 2 cents but I've spent 17 years teaching auto technology and have retired from teaching and still remain employed in the auto industry.  | ||

I agree, go with a 2 post. I work with them everyday. much nicer if you get an underground unit. But i'm sure they are a bit more $. 4 post are only good, if your just too lazy to get down on your knees to set the post. But if you will be storing and working on it, I say go two post. but it its for storage only, 4 post will work. but don't let it sit too long and flat spot your tires. | ||

The main purpose for the lift is to store my Firebird. I am worried that the two post lift will not be safe for long periods of time. I dont want the car falling off. I think the drive on ramp kind will be more secure | ||

doesn't look from here like that lift can even get under the ferrari. nice lift, nice car, but i don't think they are compatible with each other. i'd like to have that problem myself. | ||

2 and 4 post have locks. they are both secure. every time I put a car on my 2-post at work, i grab the bumper and shake the piss out of it. never had one fall yet. and cars get left on lifts for long periods of time all the time. if it was me, a 2-post would be my only choice. And i'm spending 8 hours a day standing under one. | ||

I think that the 4 post is more versatile (at least for my needs). A 2 post can`t accommodate some of my needs. I have a 17' Rotary 4 post. I can go from 1 ton service van to 1 ton stretch truck to mustang to trailer to ditch witch trencher to lawn mower(tractor) and a couple times when I needed extra floor space I was able to put 4 ATV's up there. Heck I could put the bobcat on it if I needed to. I do agree with getting the proper type jack (wish I had one) If you don`t have the right type of jack you are asking for serious trouble. |
