Jamie.. Not meaning to muddy the water.. But I don't think what you ask about the founders of HoSuKaYama, Ducati or KTM meeting people.. I know for a fact that a conversation with Soichiro Honda is right out. As are conversations with Hans Trunkenpolz, Adriano, Marcello and Bruno Ducati or Michio Suzuki, Torokusu Yamaha and Shozo Kawasaki. To add to that, none of us can 'chat' with the founders of H-D either. At least not a 'credible' conversation.. (not meant as a slight to the mediums amongst us)

On the other side, A lot of the things that Buell has done over the years, are leading the industry in communication with the owner/user. Part of that they get from H-D, the real trick is that they really do listen to what we have to say. Do they always act on what one person says or complains about on a given item? No, that would be un-realisitic to imagine a corporate entity changing a production unit to satisfy ONE purchaser, however some of the modifications, additions and what not that were started places like the BadWeb have been adopted by the factory (to one degree or another) and that speaks volumes about how closely Buell (the company) monitors what we think and do with their creations.

I think the proof of it is that other companies are just now STARTING to do the same things, they just don't have it as 'intergrated' into their business plan as Buell does. WDW (one of Rockets examples) isn't an 'old world tradition' since it didn't even start until 1998. The other events mentioned seemed to be 'special' events, not regular weekend events, whereas I understand I could be in a bar in the East Troy area (or just about anywhere else) one night and end up chatting to the chief designer of my motorcycles in between jam sessions. Now that is something.. I also understand I could find myself at a track day with the CEO of my motorcycle company and hold a friendly chat with him.. and it doesn't even have to be about motorcycles. I don't recall hearing about folks having a chance to chat with

I also feel that Buell really did take a huge risk when they released honest pre-production machines for both the press and public to ride. It was a calculated move that could have truly backfired for them. Face it, if they had all this time, effort and money sunk into the project and it was no where near as ready as the bikes were, they would have shot themselves in the foot and may very well have had truly dark days ahead as they tried to crawl out from under the PR nightmare that was waiting for them. Oddly enough, they (Buell as a company) seemed ready and willing to take it all on. Every bit of praise or complaint for their machines are looked at honestly (in my humble opinion) and regarded as such. As it is, MY 1125R is better for what happened, they got an insight that a lot of makes never see until AFTER the bikes are in the wild. They got real rider impressions and complaints, most of which were things they dealt with and had corrected for the release version. I can't tell you about the vibration I felt around 8500rpm yet, as I still have a lot of miles to go before I'm supposed to take it up that high.. But when I do, if it's still there, yes, I'll mention it again. Will it suddenly go away because I mentioned it and Erik Buell with a portable shop and team of twenty will have read my comment and flown to my home to personally re-engineer my motorcycle? Nope, don't think so. But I have a vested interest in the brand. I don't own stock, but I own the machines. I like them, I ride them, I photograph them (racing normally) I would like to think that they (the company) see that bond between us and do care about problems with their product and maybe, just maybe I'll help improve the breed for the next generation of bikes. Would I turn down an offer to 'real world' test ride a new model for them? Don't be stupid, I'd love too. But would I expect it to happen? No... For now, this is enough.. Heck, I may even get to meet the folks that built my bike when it goes home later this year.. (hopefully it'll let me go with it)..

Damn,Sean,is it the bleak English winters that bring out this behavior in you,as it seems you cycle through a period of Buell bashing every year.? Only to suddenly turn about and be a decent sort with some actual contributions to the board. What you do here is nothing but baiting and bashing with thinly disguised queries for information. It reflects badly on the person you are. What drives you to stir the shit so much escapes me,esp when you profess to be a fan of Buell. Do you just enjoy arguing?
I really like reading your posts when you are contributing in a positive way,but when you are like this it is disheartening and sad.
And where do you find the time to carry on like this,I thought I had lots of free time, but can barely keep up with the reading let alone write the reams you have been slinging on seemingly every thread on Badweb??

Thanks MikeJ. You should try it, really! In fact, I hereby virtually demand that you try it! : ]

BTW, I've seen worse jobs. I recall the video showing a zoologist enclosing his right hand and arm up to the shoulder within a garbage bag then engaging in repeated aggressive stimulation of a bull elephant's prostate, the end desired effect being collection of the ensuing ejaculate. The guy was apparently a real animal lover. The bull elephant apparently liked him too. : ]

It wouldn't matter a shit how much good content I post on BadWeB, the very second I say the slightest thing unagreeable to some peoples sentiment, the knives are out.

I added to other peoples comments that I found the 1125 ugly. Of course I knew I'd be opening a can of worms the moment I did. So should I say nothing?

I come to the BadWeB like everyone else does that hits a keyboard. That is to participate. That I participate often is because I like to. Truth is, I like BadWeB more than I do Buell. So should I avoid all threads with any Buell content? Even then I'd still be chased around by the long knives. I start a thread on TVR, and look who pops in to take a poke at me. Go look. You know well the people I'm talking about. They're as antagonistic as you see me.

What drives you to stir the shit so much escapes me,esp when you profess to be a fan of Buell.

I think where Buell is concerned, the BadWeB needs a bullshit counter seeing as there's a lot of it flying around. I've taken up the role voluntarily. The good news is, in doing so, I hope to serve the BadWeB Buell community by countering the bullshit for truth and facts.

Where for example is the proof that a stock 1125 restricted to 116 rwhp hit 171 mph?

Where is the proof that the 1125 is capable, all things being equal, of going head to head with superbikes from other manufacturers?

Where is the proof that the 1125 is the most aerodynamic naked motorcycle produced?

These questions don't matter. I mention them merely as bullshit the BadWeB is fed. Worse still, at least two of the questions I raise are in direct response to stuff posted by people representing Buell. I just find that plain wrong, and I just have to question that which is wrong.

However, you'll be glad to hear I'm tired of the voluntary bullshit counter role. Whether I can avoid it or not, I just can't say. It certainly has produced some good commentary on the board though. Maybe it's time I retired.

Rocket - I like to debate as much as the next guy and I have enjoyed debating with you on some points. I hope you continue to do so here. One critique though. You are posting questions on threads like this one title "Anyone having trouble with their bike" under the 1125R section. Why would you post on this thread. You do not have an 1125R. You and I debated some tidbits on the thread named "riding impressions" Neither of us have ridden one. You walk onto threads stating your opinions about topics you do not belong in. Now you throw this "poor me" response after you get the back end of many here. I don't buy it Rocket. You slap the bull in the ass, sooner than later you get the horn. Post your opinions in the proper threads or start your own and its all daisies in my book.

Back to debating. I say Buell is the motorcycle manufacturing leader in manufacturer-customer communication. I see in post earlier that others have said similar statements and you questioned it. I believe I have a good challenge for you to prove my statement. Please find me an example where an owner of a motorcycle complained on a message board about a broken part on his bike and have the factory call him at his house the next day. The manager at the factory ships a replacement part next-day-air because the owner is going on a trip later that week. The shipment and the part are no cost to the owner. I want to see if you can find any objective evidence that other motorcycle manufacturers are paying as much attention to their customers as Buell. Only restrictions to the challenge, it can not be a direct customer service department website, phone call, etc. It happened here on Badweb with Buell, I just want to know if any other motorcycle manufacturers are so closely in tune with their customers.

The labeling of a serious attempt to get answers as 'poo' is just that.... poo.

I am sad to say I have read these two pages of poo and I have to agree with the labelling. What serious questions about problems with your 1125R are you not getting answered?

I imagine you are referring to Buells 'Project Elvis' initiative.

The challenge you set us pretty unfair on a number of accounts really.

Firstly we have Court contributing on BadWeB, who communicates direct to Buell when he sees a customer either here or from his email through being here, in need of a Buell fix. The same applies to Erik and any number of other Buell factory personnel. They too can take advantage of a private run website to communicate with customers, which other manufacturers, partly because of their massive size, are unable to do. That Buell employs a mere handful of people works to the advantage of such a small scale company. You can't expect Honda or BMW or KTM to have such close contact given the amount of people alone they employ.

Then one could argue further that Buell have a huge advantage over larger companies because Buell are what, 90% give or take, selling their product into a home market. Even taking into account helping customers on foreign shores, the number of customers are so small it is relatively easy to satisfy their needs if such is the case. You could not expect the CEO of Honda, sat in Japan reading one of many Honda forums, see a UK based Fireblade owners comments about having a slight problem with their new Blade, then the CEO Japan takes it upon himself to get that one individual sorted. The logistics to do so would be enormous, and even if such were possible, what happens when every Honda owner worldwide with the slightest of problems expects the same treatment.

Buell have a good thing going for them where communication with their customer base works. There's no denying it. That they are advantage by size and location to their mainstay customer base is great for the customer providing Buell allow the flow of communication to provide both parties well. Bravo to Buell for realising such an opportunity.

However, I have a counter challenge.
Do you imagine if anyone called Erik next week he'd take their call?

Firstly we have Court contributing on BadWeB,

Very true. Oh "That is an accurate statement."

Then one could argue further that Buell have a huge advantage over larger companies because Buell are what, 90% give or take, selling their product into a home market.

I believe I read somewhere that 60% of Buell motorcycles are sold in Europe. Japan is a good market (in scale of course) for Buell too.

You could not expect the CEO of Honda, sat in Japan reading one of many Honda forums, see a UK based Fireblade owners comments about having a slight problem with their new Blade, then the CEO Japan takes it upon himself to get that one individual sorted.

No, I agree, but with sites like Adventure Rider calling for the Translap to be imported into the US again, Honda gets a big HELLO that they are not paying attention to. KTM did the same thing with the 990, but they finally listen and I believe it is paying off for them. I am not talking Honda CEO, but locals from Honda Motorcycles North American division. Adventure Rider is a large site that is global and specializes on bikes like the Translap. But Honda believes the only motorcycles Americans want are Cruiser, Race Replicas and Dirt bikes. They are out of touch with a good segment of riders here in the US and the tools to find out what Americans want. A segment that Buell tapped into with the Uly in Honda's absence.

Buell have a good thing going for them where communication with their customer base works. There's no denying it. That they are advantage by size and location to their mainstay customer base is great for the customer providing Buell allow the flow of communication to provide both parties well. Bravo to Buell for realising such an opportunity.

Agree.

As for your challenge, I do not understand why this is a challenge. Are you asking me to call the CEO of Buell and other motorcycle manufacturers and see who calls me back first? To just see if Erik would call me back is no test of my original statement. Erik did not call the house when I broke the latch on the bag of the Uly. But the correct manager over the item I was having the problem with did. I would say if I truly had a need to contact Erik I could. I have met him twice so far and was nice enough to autograph a picture that he took with me and the family. So I do not accept the challenge because I have no need to call CEO's of motorcycle companies, but I do think if I had a valid reason to contact Erik, I could.

If he is in the office he just might. He is very accessible to owners. Obviously he can't spend his day on the phone chatting up owners but he does enjoy it.

Now that well groomed chap you put up there looks like rather an expensive pastime to me. His hair stylist for a start, looks to cost a lot more than Britney's. This thread is becoming the F-off thread. I know Ducxl's comments make some people mad, but some of them are true. There have been bad batteries, bad voltage regulators, some techs are not fully trained and some peoples other Buells have been screwed up worse by their dealer. I'm sure all the problems will get resolved and people can start enjoying their new bikes.

Spatten - yes, things have changed. The OEM Batteries on all HD/Buell vehicles now are AGM sealed batteries. No dealer fill required, no fluid check required. Unfortunately like most other electronic devices these days, there are no "warning signs" of a bad unit, nor any shades of gray for failure. Good or bad, black and white.

There's good information and then there's pissing in the wind.

The fact that there are battery issues doesn't call for the whiney "I told you so" that he posts every chance he gets on this and many other subjects.

Geez, I re-read the above and it sounds like I'm defending Buell - but that's NOT the case - just wondering why on EVERY online discussion board - there are always the Rocket and DucX1 personalities who feel that just because there is one technical point they make with a little validity, that it gives them license to be petty.

(apologies again - I'm doing just what I typically try NOT to do - getting hooked)

Typically someone like this is looking for a response; If you give them the response they are looking for they succeeded in their quest. If everyone just ignored these types of posts with absolutely no response, they will eventually stop (and go somewhere else where they can get the response they are looking for). Kinda like a child testing you. My 2 cents.

Anyway, we have what, two or three charging or battery problems and how many bikes have shipped? What's that percentage and compare it with all the other manufacturer's failure rates. Oh, I forgot. All the other manufacturers never, ever have a component that is defective from the factory. Nuff said.
