Is the oil filter on a Buell, filtering the oil entering or leaving the oil tank? |

On the older (tube frame) its from the tank to the motor. |

I believe on the dry sump system it goes from the oil tank to the engine and then from the scavenger pump through the filter and back to the tank. |

I thought the scavenging pump 'scavenged' oil from the crankcase and pumped it to the oilbag (or swingarm on an XB) where the oil was then fed to the pressure circuit in the pump and sent through the filter before reaching any part of what it needed to lubricate and cool in the engine. |

Jim Looking at the S1 manual in section three the description indicates oil flows from the tank thru the pump to the oil filter. Just like the external oil lines would indicate. Not sure if any flow changes where made in the XBs. Joe (Message edited by bad_karma on December 22, 2007) |

Because of the oil flow direction you should always fill the oil filter with oil before installation. If you don't the oil pump will fill the filter first before the rest of the motor. |

No matter what you do... the oil pump will always fill the filter first before the rest of the engine. I doubt these roller bearing engines would even notice a few seconds of no oil pressure, but it always gives me a feeling of reassurance to fill the oil filter as much as possible when I install it. |

Thanks for the answers. The reason I ask is I recall someone discussion from people changing the oil during break in and expecting to find metal in the oil but not seeing any. I was wondering if it might have all ended up in the filter. It seems that the general consensus is that the oil is filtered after it leaves the tank, so that doesn't seem to be the case. |
