I've been offered an assignment to move to London for 2-3 years for work. I've been interested in the Buells for a while, and this assignment would allow me to pick up a new Buell! So two big questions: 1) Can I bring a US Buell to the UK with me and what hoops would I have to jump thru? Are there differences if I bing the bike back with me, or sell it over there before I return home? 2) XB12sS, XB12sTT, or XB12sX? Only have a dirt bike right now (KTM 300 EXC), so I I'm more accustom to the low end torque style of riding, thus the interest in the Buells? I'm hoping to live in London, and then commute out of London about 20-30km to where I'll be working. What would be the pros and cons of these three bikes in this situation? Thanks -Nate | ||

I am sure the UK guys can answer all your questions. I know it would certainly be less expensive buying a bike here, especially if your company is going to pay for the shipping. I have heard that you may have a problem if you wanted to sell it there. I don't know if that is fact. Again, one of the guys like Rocketman would have a better handle on that sort of thing. I think going to the ACE Cafe on a Buell would be to cool. I know there are a lot Buells in the UK and the rest of Europe. | ||

I was in the same situation as you back in 99. I researched what it would take and found it to be somewhat difficult, but not entirely impossible. Rules might have changed since then. One of the most irritating issues is that you have to take your drivers license test if you plan to stay longer than 6 months. It's obviously doable, but an irritant. After shipping and all that comes licensing in the UK. That wasn't such a big deal (again back in 99) then but it might have become somewhat more complicated now. The bike needs to be Euro spec and that would take take some changes here and there. I believe Trojan, Rocket, and Mr_Grumpy can chime in there. I never did get a straight answer if I needed to pay import tax or not. I was on the phone with a London broker and they sent me a pamphlet which did not clearly state the rules. I followed up with a phone call and sited the pamphlet, but the person I talked to could not make that clear for me. At any rate, it eventually all became a non-issue for me since I decided not to take the job. | ||

If you brought a US spec Buell here, and rode on a US license, I believe you could get away with such for as long as however, providing you left the UK with bike once every six months. Simple then. Dover to Calais and back. If you could brass it out for however long, your Buell would not need to comply with UK / Euro laws. Most cops would leave you alone unless it was obvious to an individual that you'd been riding a US plate Buell for more than 6 months. Of course, you'd need to keep your nose clean, which isn't easy riding a bike around London and the home counties. Speed cameras. Traffic light cameras. Bus lane cameras. Parking regulations enforced by a militia. You get the picture. Forget buying over here unless you've been here long enough to earn UK money. Otherwise consider the dollars you bring will need doubling. Rocket |
