Letting off the throttle and getting a little more is a sympton of a lean situation.

Concur - which suggests intake leak.

What ever - I had to re-install my intake 3 times on the red bike (only once needed on the Black - I figure because the plastic pieces are not perfect) - the third time using gasket sealer on the dry side of the carb gasket & max torque values the factory supplied to totally seal everything, you have spring bracing right, air screw between 2 1/2 and 3 turns? The boot is new and the clamps tight but not too tight - lol - also remember to keep your knee off it - the knee affects the boot as well - adding extra forces causing premature failure - lol

i've pretty much ruled out anything on the boot side of the carb, I've tried tight clamps, loose clamps, reseating it about 5 times and pretty much everything short of selling the slow poke POS

Recheck your entire fuel system, tank vent, fuel lines for flow, carb inlet needle and seat, and if you are running the same jetting that EZ is running, I would say intake leak! Did you check the gasket between the head and elbow? How does the sparkplug look? Is the wire/connections goodntite?

Good luck, let us know.

By the way, I made it back from Boston today 750 miles in a Subaru Forrester with a real bad tire that shows up as a violent cyclical steering wheel shake at speeds over 60 MPH.
But hey! I got to see the birthplace of this great country!

I also saw 4 BMW riders on the Mass Turnpike this morning at 32 degrees!

Styx: Going on the assumption that it ran fine with the PS intake and nothing else has changed (besides the popular notion of the carb boot possibly leaking), some things that might be working against you .
Its winter. If the bike isnt fully warm its going to be running lean WOT(for conditions).
Putting on the stack or, more importantly, taking of the A/F leans up the whole rpm range. Even though your running a 180 jet, it might still be too lean (esp. if cold outside and engine not warmed up).

Some possible remedies: Unplug the TPS. That sets the timing curve at WOT. So if the speedo disconnect was having an effect, thats no longer an issue.
Shim the needle. Go 1 washer at a time or just do 4 and see. It wont affect WOT, but it will affect the rpms getting there.
Find an A/F that fits. Ugly, awkward, temporary, doesnt matter (UNI makes some cheap ones that might fit the stack). Just something to counteract running the carb unfiltered.
Do the WD40 (or carb and choke cleaner) test for an intake leak.

Just some ideas and certainly not meant to be conclusive. Just trying to help!

K-Rid: No idea on the tail light, but bigger is better! Like it.

PS I really dont want to see any more pictures of the farm. I could stand on the roof and hit each corner of my property with a wiffle ball - and I have a big yard for Southern California!

rode it again, with and without the tps plugged in, it really didn't make a big diff either way, top end just isnt there altho I can now get it up there its still lacking power up high in the rpms at WOT, I'm jetted 175 right now and I cant find my 180, I'll have to order one, maybe see if that helps, shimming the needle will have to wait, I need to drill out the screws on top of the carb to get to it, its running a lot better now, some of the problem was the stack wasnt seated to the carb 100%, still doesnt solve my high rpm WOT issue

I finished the controller board for my LED blinker project! Next step--designing the circuit boards for the LEDs. I have some 30 mA LEDs that hurt my eyes when I look at them, so it'll be BRIGHT!!! I'm going to have my signal lights lit up dimly like running lights. I'll record an avi file when it's running...

Kid I have the same issue with 48/175 jets. But I only have open pipe for exhaust. Let us know if the 180 makes any difference.

Its a matter of shimming - with the 180 - I would recommend 1 less washer - Though I'm still experimenting with needles - it won't get anywhere till Insidious is built - testing wise.

tested it with the 180, same story, pulls good at WOT until halfway up the powerband then BAM, no more power,

"Insidious," "Maul" "Vader," hey EZ, don't you have any happy Blasts like "Trusty," "Heidi" or maybe "Jar-Jar?"

OK, maybe not Jar-Jar.

Hi guys. I'm new to this forum. I have a 2001 Blast. I added a Jardine exhaust and a K & N filter. I also did the breather modification and changed all fluids. I also drilled out idle plug. Tonight I'm going to jet the carb and shim the needle. So far This bike has been pretty easy to work on. ( removing the right peg mount was kind of a challenge )

runs a little better with a 185, it still does it tho, not as bad I'll try it again tomorrow, I think it might need the shims, it pulls really good down low, it just gets to a point at WOT about halfway up the rpm band where it just hits a wall, and its done this with the 175, 180 and 185

The name Insidious should give an idea of the colors I'd like the bike to be - either blue or black - using the translucent air box with black smoke plexi-glass bottom and electricals mounted to that, and either a black or blue fender with black lighting to the front and just break-lights, signals and plate to the rear with a black seat and wheels (although if I find a set of blue - thats ok too);0) - black controls, super-bike bars - black, bar-end mirrors - the frame and swing arm are silver - though I think the cf covers and then the puck frame protectors and a set of axle sliders front and rear could well finish out the bike - what will I do differently with the engine - Probably take B.Nallin's advice and cut the reverse meg and add a Suppertrapp 4" with 12 discs to regain some bottom and keeping most of that awesome top end - maybe go to Mikuni 42 for that last bit - tuned in with some gentle dyno runs - lol - will I go hi-comp - not till rebuild time - Pro-series is nice and if I add some ratio rockers and better springs for the added lift - its lift profile will be similar to the SE550 with out having to change cams again - lol - thats the plan for the 2000 engine, with the 2001 motor going probably the same way - going back to the B 50 and the Hi lift rockers - the B70 is sweet on the power-band (3800rpm and up), but you can feel it kick in - so far so good for now though - but I know the candle theory is true.

Try one shim - .025 to.03 - & 48/180 - about 2 1/2 turns to 2 2/3 turns - you really want that needle to hit at its lean point - and lean your air screw out to popping then turn in two flats till it stops popping on decel - thats as rich as it needs to be - everything else already on the rich side. Hope that helps.
