just got my 02 xb9r going and took it for its maiden voyage, all went ok. came off the motorway and and sat in traffic on idle and the engine died, so i restarted and it did the same thing, the third time i started it would only start on full throttle, chug away then backfired 4 or 5 times and died and that was it. cranked it and tried everything i could by the side of the road but no joy. got the van out and took it back and stuck it in the garage, came out this morning and started fine. sound like a fuel problem but no idea what. the pump is running ok appart from then horrible screeching noise wich seems to be the norm as commented by lots of people. fuel is clean and new. im stuck and its really agrivating me as i had a big ride planned over christmas but i cant trust the thing now. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated |

What is the story behind "just got it going"? Was it stored for 5 years, did you just buy it used, are you the original owner? There should not be anything resembling a horrible screeching noise coming from the fuel pump. Maybe the fuel tank vent got plugged, creating a huge vacuum in the fuel tank and cause the fuel pump to cavitate and screech? I don't know if that is even possible, but it could happen, I suppose. It's probably something simple like that. The next time that happens, try opening the gas tank filler cap and notice if it seems like air whooshes in the moment you crack open the cap. That would be a clue that the vent is not working. |

i bought the bike as an import from japan, it had some accident damage which i have repaired and now recomplied the bike. ive done a bit more testing and the noise of the fuel pump has quietened down a bit, might have just been getting the air out. it is still running terribly, the lower end of the rev range is reasonably flat and when rode for 5 or 10 minutes it will die around idle speed but it gets worse and worse causing backfiring into the airbox and eventually it just wont start until it has cooled down. havnt got any gear for the TPS resetting unless it can be done with out a scanalyzer. will try and tesp the voltage out of the 02 sensor tomorrow. other than that i dont know what else to try looks liek my christmas ride is going out of the window. |

ok it turns out that the ECM isnt what i thought is was as this was one of the part missing when i got the bike, so i purchased one off ebay and after emailing the guy he is not too sure what i came off is there anyway of identifying it the number on the barcode has partially rubber off but i can read ---52.3AB 04209 first 3 digits are missing there is also a white paint stamp on the black plug that says '900' would this make it run terrible with the wrong ecm or just not run at all. seems like the bike just cant decide on the correct mixture please help |

another strange thing is the bank angle sensor was missing and i didnt realise what the plug was until i got it all back together, anyway it starts and runs without it. also unplugging the 02 sensor makes no difference to the running of the bike, and the sensor does produce voltage as i should. |

Since this is not a US domestic model, I would check the VIN number with Buell Customer Service to find out which country-specific model you have and go from there. Knowing that will enable you to figure out what configuration of parts that version bike needs. For instance, maybe a Japenese bike needs a certain part number ECM, or a specific type of lighting. But I'm fairly certain that all XB's of that vintage need the basic set of engine sensors like BAS, head temp, intake air temp, O2 sensor, TPS, side-stand switch, neutral switch, clutch switch, ignition key switch and On-Off switch. Each one of these plays a role in the smooth operation of the engine, so you may need to check out the integrity of each one until you find the problem. Surely running without an O2 sensor and not making a difference is a good clue that something is broke. Of all the things in that list I mentioned, I'd start with the most obvious: add things that are missing, then checkout the things that have are known to cause problems, like the side-stand switch. |

If you are running a race ecm it can take up to three minutes before the o2 sensor gets hot enough to start sending to the ecm for mixture corrections. This is made worse by the race ecm as the mixture tends to be richer and thus the engine runs colder and so a fouled plug can sometimes occur as well as fouling the o2 sensor. This is my experience with my 07 XB12R. |

nope not a race ecm, just a xb9s ecm. changed the plugs and it runs a lot better overall but still after 5kms or so it just dies and spins over as if there is no spark, (but there is as i tested it) until it cools a bit then it starts fine again. this bike has only done 3400kms so i find it hard to believe sensors are stuffed already. waiting to make my ecmspy lead and see if that tells me any more. other wise im out of ideas |

Possibly the coil. If you have VDSTS run the diagnostic check and see what it comes up with. |

not got vdst but im in the process of sorting a cable for ecmspy, will that be able to do a bit of fault finding? do the ecms change internally from year to year? |
