I retarded the timing on my Uly today to cure its pinging, and I'm wondering two things. First, just how far did I retard it? Is each tick on the CPS plate 1 degree of timing, or is there some other scale? Second, was my timing out of spec? Does the triangular opening show where the CPS should be positioned from the factory? It seems to me that the triangular hole really should be lined up with the triangular tab behind it, but maybe that's not the case.

I'm a little surprized it IS possible to adjust timing.I'm sure,in some way it affects the FI.As far as if you've affected timing, just attach a timing light and remove the plug between the cylinders and view the timing with the light to see the effects of adjustments made.Oh,wait,is there even a window anymore? FI rally complicates that adjustment now |

The triangular hole is there to help you tweak the plate with a flat bladed screwdriver. More precise than poking the plate directly. |

Looks to me like you moved it about 4 degrees... Probably too much. |

Ducxl, yeah, the static timing is the same for the FI Buells. I can't just run the bike with that plug out, can I? The service manual says there's something else that goes in there. I'm guessing it's just another plug with a glass center or something. Natexlh1000, well so much for my brilliant triangle alignment theory! M1combat, so one of those little ticks on the dial is about 4 degrees? I hadn't planned to fiddle with it anymore, but if the difference is that dramatic, I may advance it part way back again. |

You can run it with the timing plug out but you will get facefull! They have timing plugs that are made of clear plastic. |

Someone posted this related link in my Big, Bad & Dirty thread: http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/142 838/206755.html "each millimeter is equivalent to 3 degrees of spark timing" So it looks like I took out about 3 degrees. Maybe I will fiddle with it a bit more and see if I can push it back up higher. Someone else also mentioned that the sight glass timing plug is only a few dollars from the dealership, so maybe I'll pick one up and see how it looks under the light. |
