Yes, there is a real answer to the question, but you might not like the answer.
Kind of like the old Bill Cosby comedy album titled "Why is there air", just because there is.
The person(s) who officially know are probably busy getting ready for the site upgrades. Or maybe they are enjoying all the banter and taking a break from the upgrades. I do know however that this question has been asked before and the answer resides someplace on the site in one of the archives, but I have no idea what search terms will get you there easily.

I know you are right Mikej, I think some of the reason I am only at 1k for posts is that I will tend to search the archives before I ask a question I know I have seen before. But this one had me stumped, maybe I'm just slow and didn't think of a logical term to search for.  |

At 6784 I'm a Helicon too.
I've been called a Hellion before...
I believe that the story related earlier about origin of the Helicon name is associated with
a spring where Pegasus' hoof was supposed to have struck the earth in ancient Greece. |
