" Some time back there was a pic posted of a old style flat tracker with a blast engine. It was awesome. - Design a bike around a max speed of 100mph. No need to have heavy parts that would handle 200mph when 99% of the time we go the speedlimt or slighty faster. The bike doesn't have to be the fastest thing on the track - just make it the funnest. 40-65hp is alot for a bike. Not too long ago that was the norm and not to long before than bikes had 15-30hp. |

in the background of the factory blast flat tracker, is a rotax powered one. very nice looking motor.... I did do a demo ride on a blast once. with my weight, I could only get 70 mph tops on the highway. My honda gb 500 and honda ft 500 would do much more.....rex |

I thought he had blown that puppy up - its still alive and kicking - cool! all I need is a set of forks, trees, rear sub-frame and wheels and front brakes and mine will then be put together in short order as well! That set up - minus a few things - oil cooler, plastic, front fairing, etc. - makes it a lot lighter than the stock Blast even - since the Blast frame, sub-frame, and swing arm comes in around 120lbs and the XB comes in at 70lbs - so not only do you have a lighter single, but better handling as well! - Looking forward to finishing my project this next year - looks like I might beat you to it;0) GT - JBOTDS! Well, looking at it the other way around, an XB9 has a wet weight of 425lbs. How many lbs do a top end weigh? |

Those short track singles are very cool. Would be a great street bike. If the Blast engine had the same specific output per cyliner that the XB9 did (or make it a 601), had a more responsive chassis and better wheel sizes, it'd be a winner. Wish they televised flat track here in the south too. |

As for C&J frames and the like, is the geometry well suited for street duty like carving corners accurately and surefootedly or is it really more suited to being slid around? The Storz flat track dress-up kits for the Sporties are cool, but in the end, it's still a 550 lb Sporty. If the flat track frames aren't really suited for street use, then it isn't worth it IMO. |

Yeah the frame has to be lighter than the XB9 frame to take advantage of less stress created by the engine. Tube-frame is best compromise between low-weight and low-production, just ask Ducati. But engineered for the bike's engine output. |

C&J Blast frames are a 55" wheelbase and 25 degree steering head angle. They are built to handle some big side loads and have a ton of steering swing lock to lock. The weight distribution is different from most streetbikes. The engine is held low and farther back in the frame. |

The engine is held low and farther back in the frame. Sounds like is was meant to be steered from the rear then and not really leaned over as much. I have a hard enough time kicking out the rear on the CRF and staying in control. |

It doesn't work in reverse - why - because the twin uses a lot of things the single doesn't, and some of the factory parts are way heavier than the after-market stuff that I'd usually use aka fairing/lights, muffler, intake, and a lot of plastic ditched - see my bikes for details there - lol - the Blast is the coolest running motor by HD so far so oil cooler isn't nesc., in the end I'll be running a Vader style fairing, Kellerman lights - fr&rr, a stock airbox lid (all the electrics are going in the airbox;0)) and fr. fender. No other body parts except the seat and rear light - figure about 270lbs - motor - 120, frame, sub-frame, and swing arm at 70, and the misc will fill in the rest - since I have most of the parts - I actually feel this to be a realistic goal. Seeing as 270 lbs is close to the typical wet weight of a 450 enduro, I'd call that a bit optimistic. I'd be surprised if you'd end up under 325lbs wet. A race weight XB9 is usually a bit over 400 lbs wet with no starter. I think you're over estimating the weight savings from removing bodywork and ancillaries. Running a full charging system, stock battery and starter will only add to it, as well. The Blast carb doesn't present much of a weight savings over the XB's EFI system, either. Even a 270lb XB-Blast will have a terrible power to weight ratio without some serious mods. A 325lb Blast would need around 70 horsepower to have the same power to weight ratio as my mildly modded S1. I like the idea, don't get me wrong, I just don't think I'd go there myself |

Is the scale broken? That's 60lbs less than stock. Even this thing is only about 25lbs lighter than stock: The KTM Duke III is an actual 344lbs wet and roughly 60RWHP stock. That's more like it. |

EZ, I don't know where you're getting those numbers you stated after Slaughters post, but they're waaay off. Referencing my dealer intro notes, the XB frame is 25 pounds, the swing arm and subframe aren't an additional 45 pounds. Likewise, the Blast setup is nowhere near what you've mentioned . I'm putting another Blast together right now and lifted your 120 over my head with one arm. I'm cool, but not that cool! It's considerably lighter than 120. Now, is your 321 lbs an estimate, or is that the actual measured weight? If it is actual, that's pretty cool!

Well a guesstimate - from the world of stuff I took off and replaced - lol - probably shouldn't use dry weight guesstimate - but convert that to wet and it would be pretty close - during a nice little storm my wheel's bearing went bad - the guy towed Scott's almost stock (- exhaust and air box mod, clipped tail,etc) at no charge since he was a flatbed - he was really surprised about how much lighter my bike was in comparison - can't afford cf wheels, but the only heavier things - are seat and shock - still thats a lot trimmed - the XB components are even lighter - and still it would be a total suspension upgrade that is what it is all about - GT - JBOTDS! EZ Please - note: My bike is at least as light as the Crossroads - which sould come in at 40lbs lighter than stock at least - I'm probably lighter by about 10lbs due to the heavier stuff they are using - my bike is trimed - compare them - you'll see. 28-8=20 exhaust 14-4=10 rear sets 12-2=10 plastic removed&lights 5-1=4 misc etc. I figure I trimmed at least 50lbs - when you consider almost all the parts replaced are lighter - GT - JBOTDS! EZ (Message edited by ezblast on October 14, 2007) |

That thing should be light enough you can just use two bathroom scales and put one wheel on each. This would show the total weight as well as the distribution. |

Ride a Buell as hard and you'd be doing the same thing, anyway. I've pulled parts for a lot of Blast wrecks. Even one dumped hard on both sides with a smashed headlight and instruments won't have 60 lbs of parts replaced. You math seems odd. A 15-25lb weight savings seems more like it. I've heard of rubbermount Sportsters with 50lbs taken off 'em and even that is no easy or inexpensive task. The Crossroads bike is about 335 lbs dry. (Message edited by Rick_a on October 16, 2007) |
