I have put an xb front end on a S1 race bike with no speedo. My question is if you put one on an S2 what would you need to do for the speedo? I would lose the drive cable,and have to go to an electronic speedo off a later model. Is anyone pulled that off and how? Thanks Scott |

I thought S1 model year had the cable off of the transmission? |

S1 had cable from the wheel. X1, or 99-later, had the electro-drive. I've heard about "universal" units that use rotor bolts as the "tone ring", and you program your wheel size, etc., but don't have any manufacturer info. If you pull it off, let me know. I think my S1W would look awesome with a white XB wheel and ZTL2 brake! |

What was the vintage of sportster engines that had a cable from the tranny? I thought it was late '90s. |

I also herd 99 and later had a tranny sensor. I dont know all my stuff is 96 and 98. I will keep digging and report back. We need a 99 owner to fill us in. My 98 S1 did not. |

I owned a 99 M2 - they have electronic speedos with a tranny mount sending unit from 1999-up (for Buell; Sportys changed over earlier than that). Having owned one, and working at a dealer, this is not a guess. My wife's '02 Sporty also has an electronic speedo with sender on the trans. Looking at my 98 S1 and my 95 S2, there are no holes in the case for the sending unit so it would have to be machined or cases swapped to the later style. Or aftermarket wheelspeed sender system used. |

Hey Thanks Ratbuell. I went to our local dealer and looked at a 99 S3 they had in the basement. Saw the sending unit. I am going to give it a go, I am putting a baker 6 speed in so this is the time to do it. I guess I will drill and tap or weld a bung in. I hope the wiring of the electronic speedo goes smooth. |

IIRC the Baker in early bikes looses the nuetral light for some reason. At least that was the case on my S-2 but it's been awhile. Did you look at possibly machining your speedo drive to fit wheel or vice versa?? |

The easiest thing would be to machine the wheel to accept the speedo drive unit IMHO. |

Yes I have looked at a mod to the xb wheel but if you look at the hub its not going to be easy. Not much meat there, so I think you would machine a part and weld in. I did not know about the nuetral switch deal, wonder if Baker would be any help on a fix? |

Scott I have looked at doing the same thing on my 96 S1. I think J&P has a sensor that mounts to the rear wheel axle spacer and counts the pulley bolt heads. I believe this would mandate a newer electronic speedo or after market options. Joe |

In it simplest form the speedo gear drive is just a fancy spacer. SO You could go really old school and put it on the rear rim like a old Norton. I am sure you can find a speedo witht he same rear axle Diameter/ratio and a cable long enough. |
